As a procurement professional with the US Government, I am responsible for ensuring my organization receives fair and reasonable goods and services. Being able to understand the skill levels required of the technical professions involved in development systems or processes gives me a better perspective of how to evaluate vendor proposals. The importance of usability as described in the article by Mr. Nielsen is linked to profits and is required if you are going to have a creditable brand. Make something that doesn’t function properly and you can bet that your consumers will remember. Although I am not the technical expert in many of the acquisition I lead, I am responsible for ensuring my organization receives a usable product of service.
The article by Lo Min Ming reveals to us that UX and UI Designers have many supporting professions that are required in order to achieve a holistic end-state product (Ming, 2014). This article reminded me of an old quote which states “Jack of all trades, master of none” (Wikipedia, 2017). This article opened my eyes and in future dealings I will make sure I ask follow-on questions to UX and UI Designers that are supporting efforts of my organization or company. It wasn’t until I read this article that I could really visualize the enormous work that goes into the development of these applications.
Some questions I would ask to UX or UI Designers would be:
- What other specialties will you require to complete the project?
- Do you have the certifications or qualifications to complete this project?
The user experience must be gained from the perspective of the consumer. Not doing so could leave you with a product that only pleases yourself and only waists of your time and money. Having an efficient process which takes into account the customers journey is paramount to achieving usable and best value solutions.
