Biography

Presently I am an assistant professor in the Department of Advertising and PR in the Klein College of Media and Communication (KLN) at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. I recently served as the faculty advisor (Fall 2015) of Temple’s School of Media and Communication’s Study Away program in London. I have taught and/or am currently teaching the following courses at the undergraduate level: Digital Media and Advertising, Art Direction  1 and 2(traditional and new media), Advertising Campaigns (National Student Advertising Competition), Personal Branding (You are a Brand), and Portfolio courses. I also teach UX Design and Strategy in the Master of Science in Strategic Advertising and Marketing program. I served for four years as the Faculty Advisor for the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). Prior to teaching, I spent almost 10 years in the advertising industry honing my skills working for various agencies and personal clients as an art director. I have worked for small branding consultancies as a visual strategist (TONIQ), large NYC agencies launching new products (Grey and Saatchi), and on my own, I have worked directly with clients, helping them to redefine their brands from the ground up.

I believe that innovative thinking is the key to success in advertising. This was my driving force in the industry and now directly translates to my teaching style in the classroom. As a trained designer and art director, I recognize the importance of balance between beauty and function, and I work to instill this mindset in all of my students.

I am currently serving on the Board of Directors of Resolve Philadelphia. I am an active member of The One Club for Creativity/Philadelphia (formerly the Art Directors’ Club of Philadelphia, the Philly Ad Club and the AEJMC (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication). I served as a team leader for the Philly Ad Club Teens Program and a coach for the Girls on the Run Philadelphia Heart and Sole Program.

I hold a BFA in Design and Photography from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and an MS in Digital Innovation and Marketing from the Fox School of Business at Temple University.

Virtual Reality, Take 2.

Last January, I had the pleasure of attending the Consumer Electronics Showcase (CES) in Las Vegas. This show is put on each year by the Consumer Technology Association™ and it is often the place where the next-generation innovations are launched or discussed. Augmented reality and virtual reality were by far the biggest trends discussed at […]

Search: SXSW Awesomeness (and click “I’m Feeling Lucky”

October 10, 2016 By Sheryl Kantrowitz Leave a Comment

After our guest speaker on Sunday shared the I’m Feeling Lucky Google Store project that debuted at SXSW 2016, I wanted more. More cool SXSW stuff. More online technology concepts brought offline for us to experience with our entire humanness, and not just via our many screens. Lucky for me, I didn’t need to look […]

Improvement vs Innovation: The Southwest Airlines Example

July 18, 2016 By Sheryl Kantrowitz Leave a Comment

Process improvements should happen on a daily basis during the normal business workflow whereas process innovation refers more to the “A-Ha” moments of clarity and breakthrough. It is important that there is a balance within the co-existence of process innovation and incremental process improvements. Too many innovations at once may throw off the normal workflow. It is […]

An “Uber”-friendly app

July 18, 2016 By Sheryl Kantrowitz Leave a Comment

According to the Principles of User Interface Design  reading, the Uber app has an excellent UI. For starters, it is a simple interface free of distraction, offers one primary action per screen, keeps secondary actions ‘secondary’, takes the user through a logical, simple and orderly process free of distraction. OPENING SCREEN 1. The opening screen after the application […]
