At the beginning of February 2020 the hashtag #GirlDad became one of the top trending hashtags in the new year. This hashtag was created as a result of Elle Duncan’s heartfelt tribute to the late Kobe and Gianna Bryant. In the aftermath of the devastating news celebrities, reporters, friends & strangers posted tributes to Kobe & Gianna. Each tribute was beautiful and genuine; however, the Duncan’s emotional storytelling sparked a movement. In her tribute to Mr. Byrant, Elle shares her powerful story of meeting the NBA star while eight months pregnant, with her first child, a daughter. Bryant’s reaction to her baby’s gender reveal, was elation, joy & pride associated with being a girl dad. Duncan’s story went viral within hours of airing. Her story’s popularity and vitality captures the power of effective storytelling. Through the sadness of Kobe & Gianna’s passing, the #GirlDad movement has inspired fathers across the globe to share their love & pride of being fathers to daughters. The persistent popularity of this hashtag movement is a wonderful example of how storytelling conveyed with emotion and authenticity is not only successful but can spur a movement that breaks stereotypes & promotes societal change.
