280 Characters or Bust

November 8, 2017 By Patrick Yurista Leave a Comment

Twitter has just released a new update that allows users to type up to 280 characters, from the previous 140. This change is something that many people have been wanting for a long time, but Twitter was never really willing to change up until recently.

According to AVClub.com, “Twitter’s reasoning for the character increase is that the original 140-character limit was artificially imposed by the lengths of text messages, dating back to the site’s origins in the pre-smartphone era.” Which is true. Twitter is one of the only social media platforms that never changes their platforms. Very rarely to we see an update like this. This might be a strategy to stay more relevant and bring in more users and followers.

Some brands waisted no time in taking advantage of the increase character count. Brands have already experimented with using emojis and other creative ways to promote their brand. More than likely this won’t last very long, but it will be interesting to see what fun things might come a long.
