Attempting to Pimp Out my Puppy on Social

October 6, 2021 By Philip Eng Leave a Comment

Recently my Masters’s program had a videoconference with Jaclin Altman aka @Foodsbythegram on Instagram. She is a food blogger, tastemaker, and “influencer on social media.

Her story and insights gave me the motivation and drive to take my new puppy’s Instagram seriously.

So, I’ve had my puppy for about 2 weeks now. His name is Louis (Lou-ey), named after Louis Vuitton. His Instagram handle is @louisvtheshiba. And he is a cute Shiba Inu puppy from an amazing breeder in R-Kansas!  We are still in the process of getting him trained and acclimated into the city, but wouldn’t it be awesome if I could document and share the whole experience on social media??

After Sunday’s class, I knew I had to take it seriously. What really helped me get motivated was when I saw Jaclin’s playbook for how she creates content. I am going to take Jaclin’s playbook and apply them to Louis’s Instagram account:

Jaclin’s Playbook Configured to Louis’s Social Media
1.     Ideation Documenting day-to-day/ Develop content
2.     Experimentation Experiment with different forms of content ex. Videos/Photos
3.     Retest Strategize optimal time to shoot content/ Carve Out Time
4.     Photograph Actually Document/ Make Content
5.     Approvals N/A
6.     Edit Edit Content Post Shooting with Apps/ Post Edit Software
7.     Write SEO Leverage SEO/Hashtag/Alt Text Social Media Strategies
8.     Post Post the Content and potentially on other social platforms
9.     Follow-Ups Analyze metrics for performance

So, here’s how it’s going:

I started to post and make content. I did my best to edit Louis’s photos to optimize his cuteness and puppy appeal. I used apps like Snapseed and Lightroom to experiment with different levels of exposure and color correction.

I studied the competition and started to follow other Shiba Inu accounts such as @shibainu.dogs and @shibainuglobal on Instagram. I started to build up a list of hashtags to increase the chance of discovery for Louis’s account on Instagram’s explore page and SEO.

Here are the results of my latest post:

I feel that I have had more discovery from followers that I don’t know and that don’t follow me. More comments, but seems like they are automated from a business that leverages platforms like Hootsuite. I assume they have a stream with one of the hashtags I used and are engaging with my content due to that.

.

Moving Forward:

I plan to keep experimenting with my content and strategy. I plan to update my hashtags with more niche content to land higher on the discovery pages for those hashtags. In addition, I plan to foster a more engaging comment section with fewer spammy comments. I also plan to experiment with more reels and video-form content and use a multichannel approach to gain a larger following.
