Ah, the beauty of virality. Gritty, the Flyers new mascot officially broke the internet. Ok, that might be an exaggeration, but he sure made a splash. The orange bearded googley-eyed mascot hit the scene yesterday and I spent most of my day reading all the comments associated with the unveiling of Gritty. They. Were. Hysterical. I mean truly. My coworkers and I were almost in tears from laughing at some of them. This in my mind is when the internet is at its best. Plus I feel like I’m always a sucker for funny mascots – check out my two favorite recent viral videos associated with BYU and Colorado State’s mascots.
Anyways, Gritty hit the scene with mixed emotions from fans and just people in general. Just a few of my favorites for you.
So, while some people may say the Mascot is “terrifying” or the “ugliest mascot” in the NHL, I have a completely different mindset. For starters, how about the engagement rate the original post generated. 2.8K responses. 3.0K retweets. 14k favorites. That doesn’t include all the quote tweets which I’m sure was an astronomical number. The Flyers probably haven’t had this much publicity since they won a Stanley Cup. They were live on Goodmorning America and featured on everything from Bleacer Report to Barstool Sports. Add the thousands of dollars they probably generated in free national exposure and you’ve got yourself a successful campaign launch.
They haven’t stopped either. The ball is still rolling on day two. Gritty has been verified (Thank you Twitter) and continues to post funny tweets that are true to what you’d expect the “Gritty” brand to be.
So, I’m curious, what do you think of Gritty? Regardless of your thoughts, you have to give it to the Flyers, they did something here!
