Great post Aksana! You remind me of a discussion we had last Fall (I think) about the companies accessing certain health metrics of bus drivers (?) If I recall, there was a positive and a weird negative benefit. Postive in that “good” behaviors can be rewarded and used to satisfy insurance cost-lowering incentives, but what about the negative…[Read more]

Holy schmoley, James! I’m not even really sure where to begin! First off, your writing style is so incredibily engaging! The scenario you described is super unfortunate and lastly, I’d LOVE to hear about your tour of the prison (former Cleveland-, Columbus-, Cincinnati-, and Athens-Resident).
I feel a little funny for you regarding the…[Read more]

Whoooooa, what? I’ve never heard of such a thing! This is such an informatiive post, thank you Melissa! My company spent millions of dollars on our new headquarters in downtown Chicago. Christina, spot on! I was late to the IoT world only getting my first Chromecast devices two Black Friday’s ago. Since then, my world has been turned right side up!! I think I’m borderline obsessed with controlling EVERYTHING with my voice (I don’t have kids yet, sooooo). Fastforward to today, lamps, TVs, movies, music, podcasts, alarms,…[Read more]

Yaaay, thank you Steve! Your class has definitely been a hardware store for my tool bag! Sometimes, we learn things that we don’t get to apply; out of sight, out of mind. This is not one of those times! Of particular note are the Change Management discussions. I definitely need to keep this near and dear!

You know what Jill, that is an excellent point! I promise, I had the plan to at least ask folks what they thought was going well and what are some opportunities, but I think the SWOT would definitely put it in a different perspective! Thank you for your comment!

#dropsMic, Ralph, that is a very good point, definitely need to ask questions. I am not a people manager (kinda glad about that, for now) but did learn I have 56 people on the team divided amongst 5 squads or project teams. Sooooooo, uhmmm, yeah. Lol. The 5 whys are an excellent strategy (updates my cheat sheet on my OneNote).

Thank you Aksana!! I love your tips (makes note in my OneNote for future use.) I’m very excited and looking forward to actually building a career path rather than just chasing the dollar. This degree has completely changed my outlook on having a job versus a career!

This is the sound of being equal parts excited and scared out of my mind! After years of being a Sr. Business Analyst, taking the “What” and the “Why” and translating it to the “How”, I am now responsible for […]

Torri, first of all, congratulations !!! You got this; I have no doubt. Secondly, thank you for outlining this 30-day plan. I think, in brief, it is beneficial regardless of industry. Empathic listening will get you further than talking. Getting to know the team that has been working together for years is certainly a plus. Understanding team members’ pain points, frustrations, successes, and victories will help outline the strategy and make change less uncomfortable. Finally, keep an open mind, flex those analytics muscles, and try to have fun! Good luck!

Congratulations Torri! Happy for your success. The 30-day plan sounds like a great one. In addition to #1 (listening), I would recommend asking questions too. Perhaps you can gain a new perspective by asking the 5-whys on certain issues with those lingering open tickets (I feel your pain there as we have the same issue with the backlog). Just curious, as the product manager, are you now a people manager as well? Reaching out and listening to other product teams’ issues and processes is helpful as well. Best of luck to you!

Congratulations Torri! I like Ralph’s idea of the 5-whys. I’ve also utilized a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) when first starting a new position to help guide the understanding. I’ve done this with multiple stakeholders and then compared to see where the common threads were and start formulating some plans for the future. Best of luck!

Congrats Torri! You’re 30 day plan sounds awesome. It is so important to try to meet everyone you can when starting a new job. This will be helpful with Ralph’s added point of asking questions. I know when I started my position it was super helpful to meet as many people as possible so I knew the right person to go to for specific questions. Asking each person on my team questions gave me the opportunity to start to get to know them that first week on the job. You’re going to do great! Good Luck! Let us know how it goes 🙂

Torri! CONGRATULATIONS! You are going to ROCK this new position!
I also agree with your 30 day plan. I especially can appreciate the first point that talks about “listening”. For the first three months during my new position, I did exactly that. I also set up meetings (pre-covid) where folks could stop by my office and get to know me and what my role entailed. I set up my office to reflect my style (open, transparent, colorful, added a candy bowl (with the good candy) lol!) and as folks got to know me they were willing to listen to my ideas and appreciated my style. I had my work cut out for me, but 6 months later, it also seems like I’m earning their respect. So excited for you!

Congratulations, Torri! You are a rockstar and I love your 30-day plan. I like your point to meet everyone – especially in a time of working remotely, starting a job requires you to learn dynamics of the company and build relationships and this is a reminder that I needed! From your class participation to working with you in our group project I can attest that anyone would be lucky to have you on their team!!

Preach, lol!!! Yes! I actually just performed a software feasiblity software study to adopt software that performs “X” function; a current gap right now. Every software, product or SAAS salesman out there has a solution for our problems. The trick is just fighting through the clutter and noise and get just what we need and makes sense.

Thank you Kathleen! AND, I stayed employed, lol! I remember being in the breakroom absolutely crushed on the verge of tears and a manager came in to chat with me and recognized it was a mistake and tried to make me feel better. Wow! I LOVE it! It’s easy to look at “Karen” or a “Permit Patty” and immediately denouce their behavior, however I think you touched on a really great perspective in analyzing the root of the behavior and how we can react to it from a business professional lens. Thank you for the post James!
