I think a lot of people don’t really understand what GMOs are and immediately see them as a bad thing. We’ve successfully engineered crops to be more weather- and disease-resistant, more nutritious, and more productive. While this obviously helps minimize the impact that agriculture can have on the environment, there’s some aspects of growing that…[Read more]

The future of healthcare is absolutely going to be digital. Think about how often you see your primary care physician – for most people, it’s a one-and-done yearly physical. They’ll record your blood pressure and weight, and probably perform a metabolic blood panel. This only provides a single “snapshot” of your health, and doesn’t do a great job…[Read more]

I think one of the biggest challenges for implementing IoT solutions in agriculture is access to high-speed internet in rural areas. It comes as no surprise that broadband internet is more expensive in these areas due to the population density being much lower than in urban and suburban areas. This is especially more pronounced in developing parts…[Read more]

My fiancée and I adopted both of our cats during the pandemic, and they’re pretty attached to us since we’ve been home for most of the past year and half between working from home and not going out as much at the height of things.
I’m glad I’m not the only one experiencing the food shortages. My one cat will only eat a specific brand of wet…[Read more]

Dealing with cable companies is frustrating, and it’s one of the main reasons why I haven’t had cable in years. Why should I pay an exorbitant amount of money every month for hundreds of channels that I’ll never even watch and the poor customer service that goes along with it? No thanks. I (and many other) like streaming services because they…[Read more]

I think the easiest way to limit food waste at home is to meal plan. Not only does this save money, but it lessens the chance that you’ll buy products that won’t get used.
Some of blame definitely can be placed on businesses. I remember going to Aldi recently and saw that the only avocados they sell are in bags of 6-8. Unless you’re making…[Read more]

Hi Taylor,
This doesn’t surprise how vulnerable a lot of our electronics are. I have tried to take precautionary measures in my home to ensure that I don’t hacked While I don’t know if they are necessarily working, I haven’t been hacked yet so I am going to assume it has been working. Our wifi also has a password. We make it one that isn’t easy to remember. Its a bunch of letters and numbers that aren’t easy to guess. As for my phone, I also have a two factor authentication. I am a big online shopper, so I try to take all the precautions I can take in order to ensure the safety of my debit and credit cards. I don’t know if there will ever been anything that will make me feel absolutely safe about using the internet There will always be hackers out there. I just do what I can to try and stay as safe as possible. -
Hi Taylor,
When I read you the part in your post about the password on your home Wi-Fi network, I laughed because my family has the longest and oddest password set for ours that I can’t even remember it half the time. I think it is such a good thing to have passwords set on your Wi-Fi and just about everything. I do not trust anyone and with the technology in today’s day in age, anyone can hack anything. We also have Alexa in just about every room in my house which is also very worrisome because you know someone is on the other end of that listening, but I feel like there is hackers out there everywhere and I try and do my best to keep everyone safe in my home through technology.
Great Post!

Hi Taylor, very interesting post! I agree that two-factor authentication is a really great way to secure your network. Sometimes it can be a nuisance, but ultimately it’s for the better and not only protects you from hacking but allows you to track/monitor if anyone does try to access your accounts in real time. Personally, I have always been super weary of connecting certain devices to my home, such as the Amazon Alexa, precisely because of some of the horror stories I’ve heard about hacking. I’ve always said that while certain technological innovations are pretty helpful and cool, we have to be super careful not to become too dependent on them because they also make us more and more vulnerable with each device/innovation that we use. In my opinion, some things are just better and feel safer when you approach them the old fashioned way.

Hi Taylor,
I have always loved the idea of smart devices. I think any type of tech I buy now should be an IoT device. So I feel like I have sold my soul to the devil when talking about the security flaws with them. I have many Google smart devices, smart security cameras and even a smart alarm clock set up around my home. It just seems necessary now even though I hate talking to Google or Siri and would just rather pull out my phone and do it myself. Either way, I continue to buy new devices and just ignore the security risks.
I don’t have the default password on my WiFi and I always get notified when there are new logins on my Google and other accounts that control my smart devices. But sometimes it does seem like I should be doing more and be more cautious. I don’t really think I will change how I use smart devices and my use of IoT because I think there sometimes have to be drawbacks to life being so simplified by technology.

I think the agriculture sector stands to benefit greatly from AI and drone/automation technology, but government subsidies will be needed to implement this technology and to train farmers in their effective use. Land will become more scarce as the planet’s population grows and the effects of climate change are realized over the next few decades,…[Read more]

Hi Gabby,
Custom keyboards are definitely a niche market, but I can see how certain customers would be willing to shell out a pretty penny for these. Professional gamers are one such group—I’ve seen gaming mice go for hundreds of dollars. Taylor, great point! There is no sense in recreating the wheel or making your team work harder for information that is already at your organization’s fingertips. By reaching out to other departments for more data, you are creating a win-win situation for your department by saving your team time and resources spent collecting data AND that data can then be used to improve your approach and targeting efforts.
I previously worked for a non-profit association that educated design and construction professionals about the power of Lean systems thinking and how much time, money and stress can be eliminated for all stakeholders if you simply remove the communication silos and barriers to data sharing to increase transparency. While we advocated for the data-sharing approach for stakeholders, we also applied that same approach to our internal workload and saw several opportunities to increase efficiencies, specifically with our educational event targeting efforts.
