One thing you said maybe one of the most important aspects of big data, “visualization is key.” There are people out there that can look at a data set and “see” the connections. I am not one of them. Having a system that can pull the data and present it in a way that is easily understood. At this point decision makers can actually make decisions on the data, not spending all their time trying to interpret it.

I really like how you mention that you enjoy a well designed menu. I too, have always enjoyed this aspect of a restaurant experience. It is an understatement that some restaurants do it better than others. I have actually judged restaurants if they had a poorly designed menu (I am a graphic designer too). The worst is when the menu doesn’t make…[Read more]

I can relate to your opening sentiments, Jen. When you really think about it, all the driving we do is really absurd in many way, with the sharing of roads and highways with so many drivers everyday. I spent a long time using public transportation and walking and biking to work and places I wanted to go. Now that I have a job that requires me to…[Read more]

Interesting concept, Katherine! If an app like this would become available, I wonder how well the Govenment could work to get everyone on board with the app. It is a great idea, because you can never have too much important information shared with the public. Another selling point to the Government of Borneo is a security argument. A lot of times these types of illegal operations are used to fund local terrorism. If something like this can be used to limit illegal operations. This would directly decrees the money terrorist groups throughout the region have to conduct attacks. That is what makes this a good solution. It would provide many different benefits to bring in more stakeholders to help champion it.

I honestly didn’t know too much about palm oil production until reading this and taking a look at a few of the sources you used. I think the Indonesian government would be silly to not want to use this satellite image technology to monitor what is happening. If they don’t, money is going to be continuously at loss. If this works out, just like they are using it in Brazil and Sumatra, other countries could start using this technology as well! It could benefit even more.
I believe that brands really need to be transparent with their consumers, potential customers, and even other stakeholders if they want to truly be successful and keep a positive reputation. Supply chain transparency has been becoming very important over the years. It is also helpful for the internal company as well because if they know all of the details in their supply chain processes, they will be able to improve their operations. They can cut costs and create better efficiency. iThe article below gives some more insight about the transparency levels and how companies should go about it and how to define it.

Sean – great point about security! This would definitely help the area.

The difficulty of transitioning this concept to business is the moving target of business. Baseball, and any sport, has a fix set a variable (states) and outcome (when games). Business is not that straight forward. The hardest part is determining success. Is it sales, profit margin, units produced, customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction,….? Once you have determined that, something nearly impossible for a company bigger than one person, you have to decide what variables to use to measure that success. I think data should be used to inform business decisions, but it will be hard to use them to make business decisions at this time.

Strategically, those questions you pose, sales, profit margins, etc., will have to be determined ahead of time as I layed out above. In my view determining success is open to interpretation, but I see the use of big data less about determining success, but informing business decisions that could lead to success. Data analysis would happen once the team of people decide which data points are most valuable to whichever question they are trying to solve. Once applied and real evidence is found from the data, they can use it to make informed decisions. I definitely don’t see it as impossible. So, if an organization wants to determine how to spend less and improve sales, which the A’s more or less did. The variables used were the players and how they were utilized based on strengths that hadn’t previoulsy been considered as a way to analyze and applying that to 162 game season. I do view a baseball season as a moving target, starting lineup, pitching rotation, injuries etc. I think data analysis can help make busines decisions now and into the future, it just depends on how well the stategy is defined ahead of time. Thank for your comment, Sean!

That is a great point. Thank you for taking the time to elaborate. I think I was misinterpreting the results from the data, and not thinking big enough. I agree that in todays age, there is no reason why data should not be used to empower data-driven decisions.
