I’m struggling with the inability to express my feelings via emoji on this platform. Am I really getting to the point where I can’t dictate my feelings in word form. And I don’t see a way to edit my updates, which is doubly troublesome for a fat-fingerer. Yikes! {insert face-palm emoji) View

This gives me all kinds of negative feels. I am clearly out of my league in the ways of human resources, but I have to ask, is the Richland Area Chamber and Economic Development a direct competitor to your organization? Or is this the way Big Brother is making sure you’re doing company-related work on company time by scouring the company chat for…[Read more]

Love this and love the dual irony of needing to hire a third-party gatekeeper to keep oversight on the use of your data by third parties!

Do you think privacy policies are sufficient? Do they exist to inform your users, or merely to cover the brands liability?

Interesting article Sara. I agree, I don’t know how many times I think, “how did I not think of that?”.

This seems like a great tool to protect consumer/user data. I like the concept and wonder about the continuous conversation around privacy, if this would be a tool that companies would integrate/partner with into their sites as a show of good faith on protecting their users’ data. As more laws are created to protect data, there may come a time when companies have no choice.

Great post Sara – I agree that we will start to see more companies like this emerge in the near future as people become more aware of their options when it comes to data privacy and sharing. Agreed with Greg’s comment above about the irony of needing a 3rd party to help keep your data private, while still giving access to Mine. It will be interesting to see how we are marketers have to adjust as these new types of technology emerge.

Great post Sara! Mine sounds awesome and is something I would be interested in using. Today’s privacy policy’s are insufficient. There are too many loop holes which is why I feel there just there to cover brands’ liability. I took a look at Mine’s website and really liked their explanation of why they started the company:

“We appreciate the ease, convenience, and benefits of being online. But we firmly believe that your personal data is yours to own and yours to give away. Imagine if you went into a restaurant, enjoyed a nice meal, and paid with your credit card, and then when you leave the restaurant, they decide to keep your credit card. That would not be OK, right? So why do we all treat our data differently? Your data is personal. It’s not just statistics – it’s your identity and sensitive information that could be used against you. We help people take ownership of their data by allowing them to make their own choices and take back what’s rightfully theirs!”

Its interesting and eye opening to see it explained like that. I’m looking forward to see how this type of company will be received in the US.

Sara, this is such a cool find! I wonder if the end users who whisk through agreeing to Terms and Conditions would be more inclined to use this app, as opposed to reading a novel about privacy policies? I would personally love to know which services I’ve agreed to provide my data to that I’m no longer using, yet are still using my data.

Awesome post, Sara! I think more and more companies will start to implement Mine to protect their user’s data in the near future. This is something I would also like to use personally to get a better idea of which companies have a close insight to my data. I am also wondering how us marketers will have to adapt to this data privacy technology.

Sara – this is great. I love the “Mayor of Teen Town” – I have recently deemed my house a Fortnite Detox Zone!

Such a good point with “as a kid.” I remember being dropped off outside the (old) Philadelphia Spectrum with my friend to go watch a Sixers Game. My buddy’s dad would pick us up on the same corner when it was over… and we were 10 years old! If I did that today, 1) I’d be arrested and 2) I would go nuts.

I’ve tried to slowly release some of the controls as my kids age… I feel like it’s more of an exercise for the parents than kids! At least it is for me.

Going back to your post James (and Jen’s/Aja’s parallel contributions), would love to talk more about these dilemmas not just as parents, but as it relates to the larger impact on society of the tradeoffs between empowered independence and omnipresent surveillance.

I chuckle here as I remember my parents’ look at my then-toddler daughter watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse when we went out to eat (we like eating out at decent restaurants and decent restaurants generally don’t appreciate unruly children!) and hearing about how “in their day” their parents apparently released them into the wilds of suburbia at age 4 to fend for themselves only to be seen again at 18 when their parents once again were content to release them permanently.

Every generation seems to have their concerns about the “worst case” of the decisions we don’t realize we’re making, but the next generation somehow seems to navigate the world they live in and learn from our errors.

As growth is exponential though, what role do we all play to “optimizing” our approach as we go as opposed to analyzing the results after all the data is “in”?

As a parent at the end of “Teen Town” I can say that those teenage years were hell. I was (still kind of am) with the younger one – the “smother”. I don’t know how we don’t smother them with all the tools we have on hand to track their every move. It also seems like nothing in terms of behavior adjustments has quite the power of turning off the phones and their wifi (wow are they suddenly compliant). In those ways, the technology has been good and bad. I agree with James that the entire experience is an exercise for the parents – not the kids. Somehow it seems to be okay in the end. I have a 19-year-old now that I was certain I wasn’t going to survive in the last few years. In the end it seems he has returned back to a nice, sweet, kind creature that I really enjoy being around and those controls and tracking just fell away the second he graduated. I wish I had released some of that control earlier for my sake.
