Great post, Lauren,
I’d say where online store experiences can be improved with VR tech, they will be. Your example of trying on clothes is a good one. But I can see VR in retail becoming something like 3D TV; the novelty an excitement wore off pretty quickly when it became obvious what a one-trick pony 3D TV was. People realized that watching…[Read more] -

Good post Eni!
@Rachel, your interior design idea is great. I’ve actual seen it in practice in my industry (apartment rentals) in some of the higher end-leasing offices. The problem is that the real estate tour VR experience is limited at best; it essentially consists of the 3D renderings and marketing materials these companies use on their…[Read more] -

Good post, Eni!
I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of the importance of social listening. But it can feel like such a massive undertaking with the deluge of content and noise being generated on social media. It also can seem like like two sides to the same coin; if I’m trying to reach a large audience then I need to be listening to that…[Read more] -

While I totally agree that some acknowledgment and expression of sorrow from Musk and Tesla right away after news of the crash broke warranted, the media’s response to this crash was abhorrent. The New York Times called it a “wake-up call” for consumers and the industry. This is from a single accident. There are 33,000 of those in the U.S. each…[Read more]

On today’s web, the website is the equivalent of the brick and mortar shops from 20 years ago. The internet began displacing traditional brick and mortar, because of the disruptive innovation of having that shop come to you. As we dive deeper into the matrix and put more of ourselves online, a traditional website is outside the confines of your…[Read more]

It’s probably not so great for me to admit that I was thinking about that throughout her presentation! I remembered an episode of Big Bang Theory where Howard was designing a device that could send kisses over the Internet for Leonard’s long-distance relationship.
It’s only a step from there to expanding the technology that “evokes” a great number of other intimate contacts.

So true! I hadn’t considered pornography during the VR discussion, but it is indeed such an obvious genre for the technology.
According to Google Trends, interest in VR porn exceeds interest in VR games, movies and sports:

People have always said sex sells. I think it is safe to assume sex drives innovation as well. That industry is what pushed streaming video among a handful of other things. In fact, there is an article on Business Insider “PORN: The Hidden Engine That Drives Innovation In Tech”. http://www.businessinsider.com/how-porn-drives-innovation-in-tech-2013-7

Great post Sam. I definitely see VR becoming really huge in the Porn Industry. Regular porn videos probably wont even exist anymore in the future they will all probably switch to doing everything in VR. I’m curious to see how marketers will start using VR in different ways to connect with their customers.

-
@Sam-Stanford, you are so right about open concept practically taken for granted nowadays. I like the parallel you drew between architecture and technology.
-
Hi Sam,
This is an interesting parallel I would have never thought of. However, less is more seems to be a common theme among many aspects of life. It makes sense that this would apply to both areas of design, The open concept is very innovative, but yet it seems so obvious in retrospect.

The value of simplicity can be seen in the most used website in the world: Google.
Although it can provide immense value for users, the window the the utility that it provides is one that has a clear CTA: type a query and gain access to information of or relating to that query.
It’s easy now a days for designers and the likes to get so caught up in all the new trinkets and features we can implement to try and make the UX as pleasant as possible. However, when it comes down to it, just like with this piece on real estate “decomposition”, less is more – always provide what the user wants. Fewer options means greater likelihood of acting on your goal and less likelihood leaving due to decision fatigue.

Sam, I really like the journey map you made. It does a great job at getting to the root of the problem of apartment hunting… Lack of Information! In all four of your barrier sections you talk about lacking of information, from not enough marketing information to not enough helpful information, apartment hunting can be like fishing in the dark. When it comes to apartment hunting you never have enough information and this very quickly leads to frustration. From finding the perfect place online and then finding out it has already been rented to finding out that your pet is not welcome, the disconnect between available information and helpful information can be enormous!
