Great post Bob, very informative. I would have no doubts this is happening to you. I feel like my family and I were victims of this with Verizon’s data plans a few years ago. We had a plan that was fairly inexpensive per month for a certain number of GB per month (I don’t remember how many). Around the same time, Verizon was pushing its new…[Read more]

Interesting article Sara. I agree, I don’t know how many times I think, “how did I not think of that?”.
This seems like a great tool to protect consumer/user data. I like the concept and wonder about the continuous conversation around privacy, if this would be a tool that companies would integrate/partner with into their sites as a show of…[Read more]

First of all, good luck on your apartment hunting. That sounds exciting and fun.
I have to admit that I NEVER click on ads, retargeted or not. I know how the process works but I still feel that slight factor of trustworthiness and avoid ads altogether. That especially goes for ads that pop up on my social platforms where we’ve talked about…[Read more]

With that in mind, do you see grocery stores evolving into something different such as smaller produce shops? If Amazon covered the non-perishables, it seems like people (us included) still want to shop for the fresh food items. Even meats are covered by such companies like butcher box, which we use.

We have not moved over to online grocery shopping. While we haven’t tried it yet, we feel like the process would not be as time saving or cost-effective as we’d like. We’re not opposed to trying it but figuring out that balance between time and convenience is the key. I do have reservations about using online grocery shopping based on the…[Read more]

Great post Melissa. Prior to covid, I worked from home a lot. So when our company made the decision to have everyone work from home during the pandemic, it wasn’t a big change for me. However, it WAS a big change for us all in the sense of collaboration and communication in this new environment. We were all trying to figure out this new way of…[Read more]

My wife and I often get lazy (don’t tell her that) when it comes to following through with our plans to go grocery shopping. We both have busy work weeks so we usually plan activities and fun things out and a […]

Totally relatable Ralph! Have you moved over to online grocery yet? What are the odds of you placing your grocery order while ordering takeout?
What is it about the latter that makes it more frictionless than the former to you?

We have not moved over to online grocery shopping. While we haven’t tried it yet, we feel like the process would not be as time saving or cost-effective as we’d like. We’re not opposed to trying it but figuring out that balance between time and convenience is the key. I do have reservations about using online grocery shopping based on the conversations in our classes. We had this discussion in another class earlier this year. So, in the end, even if we used online shopping, there would be that “laziness” of putting in the order.
-
Don’t worry. Between machine learning and natural language processing, it won’t be long before Amazon (most likely) parses your purchase history well enough to proactively just start sending you food semi-regularly!
-

Entirely possible. People are already beginning to shop that way, buying the non-perishables in bulk at Costco while stocking up on the essentials at their grocer of choice.
Have to assume the acquisition of Whole Foods was in at least some part with an eye to establishing the relationships to corner both ends of the market.

I can completely relate to this, Ralph!!! And yes, I have been known to order my groceries and then that night order takeout but only because it has saved me the day to focus on other projects around the house, schoolwork or spending time with the kids that I don’t want to stop.
I actually don’t think ordering anything for delivery could ever be completely frictionless. Online grocery I’ve received random products, apples when I’ve asked for oranges and restaurant orders that are wrong or missing dishes. I think it’s the added step ordering requires placing another level between the origin and the end-user. If there was automation in picking an order that might help the human error element to improve the friction but then that is not 100% either.
-
Love the automation idea Katie! That’s my biggest frustration with grocery delivery is the bad selection of produce. No matter how many details you provide, something in your original order will be wrong. While substitute selection is helpful, its just not the same. If there was an automation option available for scanning produce to pick “your” favorite, that would make online groceries delivery a no brainier for me
-
I know some services let you “reject” substitutions if you’re quick on the notifications, but most services are relatively lenient on refunding if items were “missed” (proof not required) or otherwise erroneous. Has that been your experience?
Consumer experience, given food is perishable, the high degree of error/refund may be a bigger drag on online grocery’s and/or takeout’s growth?
If anyone has experience here or has heard anecdotes, I’m curious what it’s been like on the provider side vs. in-person shopping.
