What an interesting, and absolutely terrifying post!! I was aware of BCI for those who suffer from physical limitations & the wonders it provided those individuals to connect & communicate with the world. However the thought of employers and Facebook using BCI technology for collecting data on personal thoughts is downright terrifying. It sounds like a sci-fi thriller gone wrong, just in time for 2020 Halloween!

Lindsay, thank you for a very educational post! I hope that no company will ever have such profound and invasive access to my brain unless medically advised. I can appreciate it when technology is giving a second chance to individuals with disabilities. The goodness of humanity really shines through in cases you mentioned (practical medical application). But I can see the dark side of technological advance if infused with the wrong motivation. I guess it’s a matter for an ethical debate. My only hope is if or when we reach the stage of tech progress, you described there would also be a set of laws regulating brain data collection and utilization.

What an insightful post, Lindsay! I completely agree with you when you say you would prefer your employer not see how attentive you are during the day. I’m so curious to see how BCI’s advance in the future and which companies prefer to use this technology or not. The concept of BCI’s have really strong pros and cons; for medical reasons I’m on board with it 100%, as for Facebook and employers… not so much.

I finally learned how filter my words, how could I do that with thoughts?! All jokes aside, there could be serious liabilities involved with letting thoughts out in the open. I know clients’ passwords…and some of them are funny. If I were to think of someone else’s password when trying to unlock another site, there could be potential for a hacker to run that password against my clients’ email addresses to find a match.
As far as employers judging attention spans, that could be hard to judge just from work performance. Someone could be less productive during work hours but then wake up with a great idea during the night that will make all the difference the next morning. I am seeing the top-performers rising post-COVID, but I also don’t think that high attention always correlates with being able to pump out work. I can be very attentive and run down rabbit holes researching for hours without ever typing out a deliverable.

Great post, Aksana! I completely agree that consumers need to arm themselves with knowledge to make these decisions. However, I do also feel that this type of information should be easier to find. I think some companies are doing a better job of being transparent and forthcoming about what they use data for (i.e. Apple). This article on Inc.com…[Read more]

I do Giant pick up all the time! Mine isn’t nearly as hands on however. After waiting, sometimes up to a week for me to be able to get a timeslot to pick up my groceries, I get a text of when I can pick up my order and that is pretty much it, I dont even get notified if they don’t have an item in stock that I am ordering and they make a replacement. I couldn’t tell you how many times I didn’t even get half of the items I ordered by the time I picked it up curbside. I love how much you actually got to interact with your shopper and they made suggestions on substitutions. My Giant curbside 100% needs to step up its game.

I am very skeptical about doing grocery delivery including Amazon Fresh. I enjoy grocery shopping and so many times I have been there I leave with more than I thought I would. The eliminate of finding sales and going through clearance as well as changing my mind about what I am cooking to get different ingredients all comes with the terriority of shopping. I really like how in the app you can shop the exact aisles and it has personalization based on your purchases.
The innovation of Whole Foods and Amazon had me curious to try the service as my office is right above Whole Foods. With a specific recipe in mind, I think I could give it a try since there are specific things I would need rather than a random shopping trip where I would be proned to wonder. On the Amazon App, they make it pretty easy to access Whole Foods and shop specific aisles. It also makes it beneficial to learn to the store.
This post however has inclined my interest to try out the delivery service. I like the aspect of being able to communicate with the person shopping for me in real time. The fact that we are staying at home and limiting our mobility, the technology that we are using on a daily basis is becoming more important to our livelihood.

Great post, Aksana! I do wish that they would take it a step further and let you pay for those items online but still leave the store with them in hand. It kind of sucks that you have to have them shipped to your address, when you are there with them physically within reach already. This wouldn’t be plausible for some people who say need toilet…[Read more]

That’s awesome, Dannie! I really like the idea of self-guided tours and ones that prospects can do on their own time (weekends especially). We aren’t really able to implement this entirely at some of our properties because we don’t have a dedicated model unit. However, I would be interested in looking into this for the properties that do have models.

Great post, Danielle! You bring up a great point – innovation usually arises from some type of disruption and a need to adapt. I really think that this will help companies in so many…[Read more]

Awesome post! My property management company had already been doing the application process 100% online but what’s changed is the way tours are conducted and scheduled– it’s all online right now and tours are self-guided. We introduced a new application where prospects can schedule their tour at whatever day and time they want and when they’re at the location, the app will provide them with a code to get into the model apartment.
It’s a good software but the issue is that it’s not integrated with any of our other softwares. People seem to love this process and doing their tours on their own times and I’m fairly certain due to its success, it’ll continue down this path after COVID-19.-
