While I’ve been lucky enough to be in a relationship through the pandemic, this Valentine’s Day has got me thinking about how dating has changed because of Covid-19 restrictions. Since there are significantly les […]

Thank god AI IoT is going to give us a way to ensure avocados are stocked up on our shelves!
I really liked what you wrote in this article. I wonder how the the better implementation of technologies like this could have helped us back in March when there were shortages of everything from toilet paper to hand sanitizer. My grocery store is still…[Read more]

I think this is a really interesting post. A lot of our clients at my job are electric utilities (like PECO in the Philadelphia area) and one of the ways they are attempting to fight climate change is by promoting their Smart Meters…[Read more]

I’m not sure how I feel about AI IoT being used that way in stores. While I realize that all stores have cameras and are monitoring everyone who comes in and out, it seems like a little bit of an invasion of privacy for them to be able to use facial recognition software to start building a profile of me and offer me tailored ads. On the other…[Read more]

Katherine – I love that you pulled pets into the IoT! I am all for making sure my pups are healthy and happy as well, and like you mentioned it’s hard to know what they want or need. I actually didn’t know wearables existed in this market already, and I am surprised I didn’t know more about these products. I wonder if the marketers didn’t have a very successful strategy, or if the products just need more bells and whistles to have consumers more interested?
-
Lesley, I do not follow the pet industry so am not sure what the marketing for these products look like. But I am wondering if they are looking at the Undershot customers that are interested, and can afford, these high end products. Then, as the first adaptors work out the bugs they will start rolling them out to a broader audience.

Like you Katherine, I am a huge dog lover. Have two myself and like most owners I want my pups to live the best lives they can in the short amount of time they have with us. You’ve introduced me to the idea of a smart watch for dogs and I honestly don’t know what to make of it. Do I think it’s ‘smart’ or do I think its insane?
I love that our animals are not left behind during this digital era, but I do think some products on the market for pets are quite lazy. The automatic feeders for instance. I wake up every morning, measure the food and place it in the bowl. I like this part of my routine and I like how excited my pups get when they see me opening their cupboard.
However, I think toys that have more than one function or can extend playtime, or even the pet cameras are important for those dogs that are left at home while humans are at work.
This pet product market has grown rapidly over the past decade and its exciting to see what brands come out with next.Do these products make our pets happier? I don’t think so. I think a pet just appreciates a good belly rub from time to time but at least we as parents/owners can feel like we are providing the best lives for our furry friends!

Wow! This is an awesome company! I have long suspected that Apple was sabotaging my iPhone to work more poorly. In 2018, I had an iPhone 7 whose battery immediately started draining much quicker once the iPhone 8 was released. I remember having to charge my phone multiple times a day and dreaming of a new one – even though the phone I had was less…[Read more]

Thanks for posting this Kassi! You definitely make a lot of good points about Amazon’s dominance with e-commerce. They certainly are the first place I turn to when I need to order anything at all. However, there is one way that I think retailers could position themselves to compete with Amazon – quality. Especially since the pandemic has started,…[Read more]

Thanks for posting this Janice! You bring up a good point about the pandemic that I haven’t thought about – the lasting effects on brick and mortar shops. In my opinion, some of the new habits we…[Read more]

Yes, I definitely think the biggest issue with an app like this would be privacy. I have a good feeling that a lot of Americans would feel the way you do about having their health data in the government’s hands in this way.. This would absolutely need to be addressed before it was launched!

I was thinking federally because on the back end I was thinking that the logistics for the distribution of the drug on the backend would be done federally, but I guess I’m not sure how that is going to play out! Integrating this with apps like the one PA has already launched would be a great idea!

This is a really great idea Misha! I think this is a great idea Sean! I think the biggest problem with having health data out there is the issues around privacy. Even though these ideas are mostly talking about preventative care, I wonder how many people out there would want this information being fed to their health insurer. There’s a fine line between some of the information you…[Read more]

This is a good idea! In addition to the distribution challenges, I’m worried that not enough Americans will be willing to get the vaccine (see Pew survey below), so I wonder if your app could help on both fronts? Live data visualizations that track how close each county is to herd immunity might incentivize and assure people.

Interesting concept, Katherine! If an app like this would become available, I wonder how well the Govenment could work to get everyone on board with the app. It is a great idea, because you can never have too much important information shared with the public. The PA Dept. of Health launched a COVID app to Pennsylvanians recently and it is being promoted heavily by the Governor’s office on social media and through other state agencies. Here is the link: https://www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/coronavirus/Pages/COVIDAlert.aspx
I’ve read that is has been a successful launch and it is really neat that it has symptom tracking and daily COVI updates. I think personalizing such and app would be important. I wonder if your idea could be launched state by state or if it would work federally? The alerts you mention too, sound interesting. I wonder also if the nation and everyone with a cell phone could receive alerts without downloading an app. Thanks for sharing, Katherine!

It seems to that this could be more than just a COVID app. If the CDC used this opportunity to develop an app they could get a lot of buy in from the public. This app could become the dissemination platform for all CDC related topics. In addition, it would offer this option. I would not use an app like this. I would not want a company or the government to be able to track me like that. I think there would have to be an anonymous tally at the site to ensure people without the app. or without phone at all, can still be tracked.

It is really interesting how COVID-19 has affected the health care industry. There are obviously some things you need to go into the doctors office for, but improvements to telehealth services do seem like the safest way for providers to interact with highly contagious patients (whose symptoms are not life threatening of course). If you have mild…[Read more]
