That’s a really great point, James. Plus, I really question whether the general public knows the true extent to which their privacy is breached. What may seem like an okay exchange for knowing my email and buying habits might not be worth knowing the location of the places I may drop my girls off for school and sports!

Sorry you had to go through this for what seems like an innocent and generous public service!!! This is certainly one of those wow moments in my opinion. My knee jerk is to say “no way you don’t need to tell them where you are going for PTO!!!!” Looking into this it seems that this is a frequent enough question that employers do have this right as…[Read more]

What’s It Worth to You?
It was an interesting conversation we had in-class about the amount of personal data collected through mobile apps. Which led me to question the general feelings of the general public […]-
Katie – This is awesome.
I was thinking about Greg’s comments with his Amazon Prime Credit Card – 5% off of purchases on Amazon and that he’s essentially selling his data for a 5% coupon. (I think I captured that right at least).
The question I have – what negotiating power do we really have? I can’t exactly email Jeff Bezos and say, “sorry… I need 10% off to do this credit card. What do you say to that ‘bro?” For now I guess it’s 5% or 0% and maybe some discount is better than no discount?

Listen James, it’s 5% back at Amazon and 2% back everywhere else. Those little points add up!
Which is of course my way of deflecting this back to all of you. Regardless of your credit card of choice (unless you’re 100% paper money, in which case “Bravo!), we all make this decision in some way. I just chose to take my payment from Amazon.
I don’t have a Amazon credit card; it’s a Chase card. All of their cards (and all other card options) offer some form of cash back, travel miles, etc. enticement. It’s a dual purpose incentive to get you to spend more and monetize your debt via interest that more than offsets the rebate, but if you don’t think all credit cards are monetizing their client’s purchase behaviors…

Long before the advent of digital media put this all into overdrive, loyalty card companies sold their data to clearing houses who in turn sold that data to the credit card companies and other third parties to synthesize for market research.
The difference is what was once only possible with static, aggregate datasets can now montiored/optimized/executed in real-time [potentially] to a single device.
You can aspire to be “off the grid”, but it’s a lot more embedded in our lives than you might realize.
-
And no sooner do I post this than I come across Amazon’s new Shopper program:
Amazon launches a program to pay consumers for their data on non-Amazon purchases
Another way to make money just for doing what you’re already doing!

I really like the Marketoonist now – thanks for the introduction. This meme is spot on.
I agree with you, Taryne. I the persona is best told as a story. Since it’s said that it takes a consumer about 7 times to see an Advertising message (whether consciously or subconsciously), to make a purchasing decision, an Advertisers dream is to follow…[Read more]

I can completely relate to this, Ralph!!! And yes, I have been known to order my groceries and then that night order takeout but only because it has saved me the day to focus on other projects around the house, schoolwork or spending time with the kids that I don’t want to stop.
I actually don’t think ordering anything for delivery could ever…[Read more]

That is really funny – not that you got stuck – but the thought of being on the It’s a Small World ride, getting stuck, and then having to listen to that cloying music for 20 minutes. That’s truly terrifying. I imagine being stuck in the Briar Patch wasn’t a great time either, though. Sorry that happened to you!
