This is awesome Jill. Very insightful and thoughtful. When you mentioned that the ocean covers 70% of earth but only 20% of the ocean is mapped, that leaves a lot of opportunity to incorporate data collection. What data could be collected outside of temperature and decompression that relate to our classes. I am not a scuba diver or have any insight into the business. I am thinking about a diver and how their information or aquatic data could contribute to social media or mobile marketing? Could the depth of the dive relate to the demographic of the diver? This is really interesting to think how mobile marketing could benefit from aquatic data maybe for the tourism industry and beyond. Like, could a hotel resort use diver data to market their resort? Or I could be totally off.

OMG! This is irritating! And yet, when I turn in vacation or sick leave, I’m required to write something in the “reason” line. In some cases I’ve put a single letter to simply submit the form, sometimes I actually tell them what I’m doing and in other cases, I flat make something up (obviously I don’t agree with the idea that my organization…[Read more]

    James,
10-15 year olds are considered junior divers and only allowed to dive to a max of 35-feet. There are a lot of great shore dives with lots to see in terms of coral and fish at 35 feet. My kids were 16 and 17 when they were certified and it was nerve-wracking to watch. One had trouble with his ears clearing and the other panicked at one…[Read more]

Jill – I love this infographic. It’s loaded with nuggets. I had no idea kids as young as 10 were doing this sport. I think it’s awesome, but also makes me hold my breath just thinking about my kids when they were 10 trying this! I haven’t done scuba diving, but I’ve done sky-diving. I wonder if they use the same content marketing plans as this scuba example – both are a bit in the extreme sports category.
      Thanks for posting this.

        James,

My kids were 16 and 17 when they were certified and it was nerve-wracking to watch. One had trouble with his ears clearing and the other panicked at one point because her mask fogged up. This is why everyone dives with a buddy and why I would recommend consistent pool dives between ocean dives to keep skills fresh and maintain a comfort level in the water. We will dive with our kids for the first time in the ocean at the end of this year and I will be paired as a buddy with one of them. It will be interesting to watch. Planning and talking through the dive and then diving the plan will be critical for them to enjoy and want to do more.

    Melissa,
This is a really interesting tool for remote work. We have moved to almost an entirely remote work environment and one that some really like and others absolutely hate. As a parent at the end of “Teen Town” I can say that those teenage years were hell. I was (still kind of am) with the younger one – the “smother”. I don’t know how we don’t smother them with all the tools we have on hand to track their every move. It also seems like nothing in terms of behavior adjustments has quite the power of turning off the…[Read more]

I find it fascinating as well that only 5% of the oceans have been explored. There is a great book called “Deep” that has some fascinating information (primarily about free diving) about how we, as humans, are connected to the ocean. Your comment about fins and breathing apparatuses is dead on. I finally splurged and bought a regulator – the…[Read more]

Great post James. I will quietly confess that I haven’t seen Hamilton yet (I will add it to the list). I’ve been mulling over the comment about Diversity of Leadership. Jill this is a great post! I find scuba-diving fascinating, in the sense that I would be too frightened to do it but pretty soon the only unchartered frontier on this earth will be underwater. Just like my interest in tall mountains I’ll never climb like Everest, I still enjoy reading about adventures in scuba diving. And I am intrigued by the people who translate that passion into going out and doing it!

With any activity that requires such a high – level of skill, those Poka-Yoke checks and balances for preventing errors are probably still helpful to even the most seasoned athlete. It’s interesting you bring up the Poka-Yoke for diving because I recently saw a show about the Eagle’s Nest. The famous cave dive known for the sign at the bottom of that part of the ocean that reminds divers of the tips to keep safe and reads somewhat like your list.

I watched this movie a few years ago and agree that it is a great example of process innovation. I believe the food industry is going through another revolution now in terms of service and perhaps the mom-and-pop restaurants can use some of McDonald’s ideas to better serve customers in a social distanced world.
