Like Matt, I’m very dependent on my IOT devices. I have 3 Google Assistant’s (mostly use them to play music on, as a timer and to turn the lights off at night), 1 IOT plug and 1 IOT light bulb and my next house will be full of IOT devices. I am fully on board with Google and have my life connected to my Google account. I realize all of the IOT…[Read more]

Hi Gretchen – Nice post! I love music, not a huge Twitter fan, but live event streaming may make me rethink Twitter! I can see live stream as being a huge benefit for artists to connect with their fans, as well as a way for fans to connect with other fans. I can see many uses for live streaming for events like this, it creates exposure to more…[Read more]

Ha! Impressive social listening. We’ll talk about TikTok the second half of the semester… such an interesting dynamic happening there.

Love this! I actually saw the video on Twitter when it first came out and it shocked me that the Mac& Cheese was made that way and apparently a lot of people were not aware which one reason why I believe this video went viral. Its amazing how Social Media in recent years has brought to light what goes on in a lot of restaurants.

Yes – this is like the Disney App, we used something similar back 2013 on a Disney Cruise. So, you had no phone service, you could only access the App. You had to turn off your data and turn on WiFi, you had to login with your cabin number and a personal code, if I remember correctly. The chat function you had to pay $5 per person to use the…[Read more]

Seems like Carnival took a page from Disney? I’m curious how this worked given WiFi at sea has to be a challenge. Were you using your phone exclusively for the app, or did you still get a decent signal for the rest of the functionality?
The last cruise I took was in 2012. While smartphones were a thing, we threw ours in the safe once we got on the boat and didn’t turn them back on until we returned to port to disembark at the end of the cruise. Personally, I would have loved an experience like this but I’m curious if Carnival offered a closed network or somehow figured out how to make WiFi usuable to a floating population of thousands without one person streaming a whole season of Fleabag and sucking up all the bandwidth?

Yes – this is like the Disney App, we used something similar back 2013 on a Disney Cruise. So, you had no phone service, you could only access the App. You had to turn off your data and turn on WiFi, you had to login with your cabin number and a personal code, if I remember correctly. The chat function you had to pay $5 per person to use the chat and could only chat in the app. The chat was basic but did what you’d expect for chat. If you wanted to use more apps on your phone you could purchase a cruise WiFi package starting at $10 per day for access to social — I actually received texts on this package and was surprised by that. You could pay more and get more access to email, news and websites. You still could not make phone calls on any package. I was impressed by the entire experience and it made the cruise a more enjoyable experience to not have to carry around all the paper. Freedom for your kid was totally worth the $5 per person charge!
As for streaming services, they blocked you from all streaming. You only could access the things you paid for, guessing they blocked the IP address?
