@samara-grossel Hey Samara, we met back in undergrad and I am so fortunate to have a friend to start out the DIM program with! We have both reminded each other of work and discussed readings together which has really helped me! View

    Hi Samara,
Interesting article! I used to see QR codes all of the time all over the city of Philadelphia in all different types of ways. I used to see them in sports arenas, within the walls of spray paint to link to artists social media pages, and even in print advertising. However, because of the pandemic, I have seen and huge uptick in usage…[Read more]

      Hey Henry, great read!
Me personally I do not know anyone who is on multiple medication but this digital innovation sounds like a great idea to reduce risks of bad reactions to drugs. This idea is possibly. However, It would be a very costly application to create and I do not know budget amount of pharmaceutical companies but they might want to spend big money on an application when they can continue with patients signing waivers to become not responsible.

      Hi Henry,

I do not know anyone who uses multiple drugs, but I feel like this new AI technology would be super beneficial. In the world we live in today, I feel like there needs to be more health coverage for the people who cannot afford it, especially the poor people who live on the streets in Philadelphia. I know my grandparents pay for much for their prescriptions and it kills me to see them putting out so much money on these medications. I would love to download this app on their phones to help them with cutting back on medical costs. I know they use a coupon system called Good RX when they are buying some of their generic medications, but that still does not lower the cost by much.

This was such a good post to read and I hope that they come out with something like this soon to help out the people who don’t have the money to spend on medications.

      Hi Henry,

Great post! Interestingly enough, I was with my dad at his doctor’s appointment last Friday and his oncologist was reviewing his medical history + list of medications he was currently prescribed by his primary. Long story short, there were at least two medications that – not only did my dad not know why he was taking them everyday, but also the adverse reactions that would ultimately ensue if he continued using in tandem with his new treatment. To that point, I think the technology mentioned above would certainly be both beneficial and in high demand but, to Brandyn’s point, very costly from an investment standpoint. Obviously those patients who are more heavily medicated, and therefore pose an increased risk of misuse, would benefit the most. Thanks for sharing!

“Dad, that’s the tank for the water softener!” — “Well, I am missing the back of my head, I think you could cut me some slack” LOL — love that episode.

And to go back even further in cartoon history, there were the “House of the Future” Tex Avery cartoons that always seemed to leave the “Mother in Law” hanging out to dry. While these are amusing examples, pop culture is full of references to machines getting out of control (Hal 9000 from 2001 ,WOPR from War Games, SkyNet from Terminator … or has anyone seen “Electric Dreams”?) because they are given too much awareness. People seem to be concerned with the idea that a computer could end up doing something deliberately malicious, or accidentally callous and with the leap over the uncanny valley getting smaller, I wonder if the people’s fears will end up hindering innovation unnecessarily. Do we need more Pro-Robot (Johnny 5!) films and TV shows to help us toward accepting IoT, the Smart Home, and the future?

      Hey Henry,
When I first read the title of your post, the first thing I thought of was that old Disney channel movie called “Smart House” where the house was basically taking over by a robot and the robot did everything for them in the house. Anyway, I think having a smart home is such a cool idea. I am already amazed at how much technology has grown right before my eyes. I think it will totally make us humans lazier but like you said, these devices could detect a leak or fire which is such an amazing thing. I think in this day in age of technology, and in general the prices of everything are skyrocketing but having a house on the market like this, that has all these awesome features, it would be worth the money.
      Great Post!

      Hey Henry!
I haven’t seen the episode, but the first thing that came to my mind when I read smart home was Tony Starks Jarvis in Iron Man and the whole Age of Ultron when you mentioned the threats. If not all I feel like most of the houses currently are semi-smart homes since people have invested in technologies like Alexa, google home, Roomba, NEST, etc. I can connect the google home to my Roomba and ask it to clean my room while I watch Netflix but I can’t ask it to watch for the wires on the floors. Security remains the #1 threat when we talk about this kind of appliance because there is so much data being collected to make them better with each upgrade. If the devices in the same house but different rooms can be connected so easily it wouldn’t be surprising if the devices in different homes or even smart homes get connected to each other.

      Hey Henry!
I remember that episode of the Simpsons! it was a funny episode! It’s crazy to think they were even thinking of that innovation back in 2001. Now almost in 2022, this innovation is seeming more and more possible. A lot of smart home activities are already happening inside of many homes. I personally am not a big fan of these ideas. I don’t think everything needs to be “smart”. Where there is a pro, there is always a con. Technology can also be hacked or malfunction. What if you have an IoT to lock your house? If someone knows how to hack really well, they can get in and out of your house whenever you want? Or what if it malfunctions? Now you have to wait for a repair guy for the lock to be able to lock your house. This is one reason why I do not have Alexa. I already Siri is always listening to me. I don’t need another device always listening.

Overall, yes! I believe the IOT is definitely here to stay, and judging by the data you supplied, will only continue to grow astronomically. Not to mention, I believe the pros of this change will highly outweigh the cons. I could see many being uncomfortable with how much our personal data is being tracked and…[Read more]

    Hi Demi,

Interesting read. I for one am in favor of the ban against plastic bags but absolutely see where new problems may arise because of it. Evidently, I wonder how many efforts were put into place in making plastic bags even more biodegradable? I for one definitely see the moral hazard and privacy violations that most companies commit when it comes to the accumulating, analyzing, and selling of consumers information and data. I had no idea Zara kept such a tight eye on it’s inventory. I for one did not know of the intricacies and collaboration between scientists, the government, and farmers in order to meet supply and demand of food in the U.S. I would think that AI would be a wonderful tool to use in order to predict, register, and account for supply and demand in crop yields. I was taken in by your title, and just had to know why? I for one am a huge anti-traffic man myself, and would love if we could do something about it!
