It’s no surprise that mobile usage is at an all-time high these days. Since 90% of the mobile time by users in the US is in apps (1) it’s interesting to look at mobile privacy and how much our apps know abo […]

This information is very enlightening, Jeremy. In response to Greg’s comment, I don’t know that people will change their behavior even if they did know all this information. If 90% of consumers accept legal terms without ever reading them and “that people would rather accept possible future consequences by clicking ‘I agree’, in exchange for acc…[Read more]

I remember this campaign and, like Emma, planned to attend one but it also had a super long line and decided to pass on waiting. But I saw through social media and through friends who went that they did a great job building the hype with their viewers and immersing them in what it would really be like at Starts Hollow.
In 2018 Netflix did a…[Read more]

I totally agree,Ben, Target does a great job of reminding everyone on social media that they are the place to shop during back-to-school season. Since Target is specifically going for the 18-25 with their campaigns I figured they would probably be doing a lot on Instagram to reach this audience. Comparing their Instagram to that of Amazon, Walmart…[Read more]

Hi Evelyn,
This is a great post, and I am on the same page. As a “dog mom” myself, companies like PetSmart may gain my attention with exciting deals and clever posts, but I will continue to engage as a result of positive, heartfelt content.
Another company, competing with PetSmart, that is taking full advantage of social media opportunities is Petco. According to Likeable.com, “just about half of Petco’s Story content from the month featured or supported the Petco Foundation in some way, be it through adoption spotlights, dog-owner features, or a listicle on 5 Ways Pets Change Our Lives. Of Petco’s remaining content mix, other key themes included influencer content (16%), adoption events (11%), and contests and giveaways (11%).” With a very similar strategy, promoting wholesome content, Petco may even have the upper-hand.
Similarly, BarkBox does a great job on Instagram, where it is rarely about products but heavily focused on their consumers… dogs. Posts are humorous and relatable, and though not sales-focused, enable this as a result. At the very least, their Instagram account promotes constant engagement. From personal experience I can attest to this as I have since paused my subscription but continue to keep up-to-date as a result of their strong social presence.
Regardless which company leads, the dogs are hilarious and the pet owners are crazy for it. They have one thing in common: They want the best for their pups, and in being so personable via social, the companies become much more trustworthy.

This is interesting to me Katie because I am someone who rarely EVER goes to the website anymore. Great post Evelyn. I found the assignment challenging as well for many of the same reasons. What helped me identify the direction was my design metaphor. Of course getting to that was a chore. I had a bit of a hard time understanding what one was and how you found it. I did a good deal of prep work research and reading to figure it out. Once i did though, the rest seemed to flow a bit easier, although I kept my inner eye on making sure I was incorporating the design principles properly. Using Adobe XD and InVison really tested my Knowledge of the Head and Knowledge of the World and both were useful as I tried to figure out how to use those programs . In the end I am pretty happy with how it turned out, I think I have design sense but I am definitely not a designer! It was a good experience though and I am glad to have had it.

Hi Evelyn, you brought up a really good point. A lot of times teams are so wrapped up in their own tasking they forget what other teams/departments are working on or they don’t have a full understanding of what the other teams do. With lack of communication and/or understanding across departments an extra layer of complexity is added to the task. A RACI chart or variation RACIQ (Q for Quality Review) would help. The final review could be completed by department leads which could increase communication across departments.
-
Hi Evelyn – In my experience most departments forget to notify the “front line” of changes and then they’ve left a gap in customer service. In working in ecommerce I’ve found that communicating effectively with customer service is business critical to the success of the “store”. A poor customer service experience will result in customers leaving your virtual store just as fast as they will a IRL store. In any situation communication is key.

Evelyn I just can’t believe my eyes! This Website looks like it is from 1991. And it is supposed to represent an art school? As a designer I think I can go out on a limb and say they clearly didn’t tap their art students or professors to help in creating this site. At least I hope they didn’t. From a brand perspective they are not clearly articulating the school’s brand and in fact this site is detrimental to the brand. Helen pointed out that it is a Wiki run by students but it is critical to use the right tools in order to clearly get your brand , value proposition and message across. By creating this site as a Wiki, Yale has made it unreadable and has not shown their strength as a design school. I would never even consider them as an art school based on this Website.
