@dan-martin Hi Dan! I saw in your e-portfolio you previously worked at Ballard-Spahr. I know several people who work (or worked) there across different departments. I’d be curious to know if we have any mutual connections there! View

Erin Mihalik wrote a new post, The Wide World of Esports: How AI is Changing the Game, on the site Information Technology Management MIS 5001 Fall 2020 4 months, 3 weeks ago

OK, I’ll admit it: I’ve never been a huge sports fan. I tried for a while to be a New York Giants fan like my dad, but the jersey never quite fit. Video games, however, were far more interesting to me. Lately, […]

Interesting, Erin! Thanks so much for this perspective.

While I’m not a huge proponent and advocate of video games [I say this while my fiancé is downstairs playing Madden (sp?)], I find the ‘training’ aspect of this application/utility of AI to be interesting. My brain actually almost immediately went to analogue sports (ie, volleyball, golf, baseball, etc), and how can AI record you pitching a baseball or swinging a golf club, and give you feedback. I personally find that to be more useful, but that’s definitely because I have a tiny chip on my shoulder with video games (and staying indoors for too long in general) 🙂

Hi Jen! I agree, I think it would be very useful and overall fascinating to see this kind of technology used for training for analogue sports, I feel like that would be hugely popular. Anyway, I’m with you. I’m not a *huge* video games person, but I’ve always enjoyed video games and board games more than traditional sports. Mostly, I value spending time outside. So give me a board game and some nice weather and I’m set 🙂

I knew esports have blown up recently, but I did not know they had AI coaches. It sounds like the current AI forces on the player and improving their performance. I think the next step would be an AI that analyzes a competitor’s performance. After a match the AI would give you information on your opponent’s playing style (he kneels just before shooting or jumps after first contact). As long as the AI is not altering the game play itself, just giving feedback, I do not see this a cheating. The amount of skill it would take to review, process, and utilize that data to change mid game would be truly impressive. It reminds me of the age-old argument about if screen watching on split screen was cheating. It is not, but that is a debate for another day.

Hi Sean, thanks for commenting! From what I read, it sounds like the AI platform Aim Lab is a paid service that gamers can subscribe to for coaching to prepare for tournaments (sponsored or high-level gamers can even write it off as a business expense – wild!). But I agree with you, I think it would be fascinating to see this turn into a real-time coaching platform for after a tournament. It does make me wonder about cheating though, because is it cheating if you were able to pay for it? Is it cheating if your sponsor paid for it for you? Maybe at tournament level, all of the sponsors would invest in this software so it’s equal across the board. Lots to think about!

I do not think it would be cheating, as long as the AI did not actually interact with the game play and just observed. Paying for an AI to coach you would be no different from paying for a live person to do it. I do not know how much control sponsors have in how you spend their money. But the user can use sponsor money to pay for live coaches, so why not AI coaches?

Wow. What a cool read about eSports and AI technology! Had no idea professional players had access to a software that can help them with their gameplay. My boyfriend is super into PC gaming, so I’ve been learning here and there about the gaming community from him. It’s crazy how big these tournaments have gotten these past few years…
I don’t see AimLab being a cheating tool, but rather a training tool. But I do agree Erin – if all sponsors invested into the software for equal access across the board, it would definitely be fair game for these tournaments!

Hi Maddie! I’ve enjoyed looking through your website, hearing about your journey to get to this program, and all of your interests. Like you, I’ve also picked up reading again during quarantine. I used to love reading when I was younger, but as you said, being in college made it hard to find time to read for fun. I’ve been reading more sci-fi…[Read more]

Hi Tosin! I loved reading about your interests. I’m not much of a dancer, but I really admire those who can and do dance! I think your interest in interior design is super cool. If you have any examples of your interior design projects, I’d love to see them. Excited to be working with you!

    P.S. I’m also from Ridley!

I feel like your article touches on topics from another article that was posted about terms and conditions statements mostly being ignored by consumers. It’s really worrying that companies can “promise” not to use your data or your private information, but what if they put the truth in their terms and conditions, banking on the assumption that a…[Read more]

Great article Hannah! I definitely plan to watch The Social Dilemma after your raving review of it in class. I wholeheartedly agree with you when you say that data is a human right being exploited without our knowledge. I’m glad conversations about this are being had more frequently. Based on discussions in class and how some major companies are…[Read more]

I definitely do not read the terms and conditions before signing up for most things. I kid myself by trying to scan them, but I’m not really understanding what they say. The biggest hindrances for me is that these documents are 1. usually incredibly long (who has the time to read all that?!) and 2. full of jargon that I wouldn’t fully understand…[Read more]

I haven’t tried Tweetdeck, I should look into that. Hootsuite is fairly user friendly, and you can hook up 3 different accounts in the free version. I like having all of it in one place, and I manage too many accounts to schedule through an individual platform all the time, but I’m with you! Good luck if you try to use Hootsuite, though I don’t…[Read more]

Great post Hannah! I agree with several others who’ve commented – I think self-driving trucks would be a useful and efficient means of transporting goods and making deliveries, but I do worry about the intermixing of automatic vehicles and human vehicles. If overnight driving could be focused on as Kathleen mentioned, I think that would be ideal…[Read more]

For those with experience in social media management, what’s your favorite scheduling tool to use? I have a lot of experience using the free version of Hootsuite, and some light experience using Buffer. I manage several social media accounts in my current position, so any advice or input on other platforms to use is welcome.

I manage the Facebook and Twitter accounts for my agency. I’ve had success with keeping it simple and using Facebook to schedule my posts and Tweetdeck to schedule my Tweets. I’ve been meaning to set up a Hootsuite account and learn how to use it. Where I work it will be hard to pay for it, so the free version is would be a great starting point for me.
