Great insight! I think the ability to work with third-party partners allows them to continue to operate like an agency, picking up client and accounts. That also might allow WMG to gain even more customer insights.

Interesting! While the insight into customer taste might be worth the ~$100 million price tag alone, I think another competitive advantage is that IMGN will remain free to work with third-party partners on campaigns (according to this article: https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/why-warner-music-group-just-paid-85m-for-a-company-that-makes-instagram-memes/).
Not only does that make IMGN a new revenue source for WMG (thus paying for itself over time), but it can be used as a cost-effective, seemingly organic marketing tool for WMG talent that is now (presumably) closed off to WMG’s competitors.
P.S. Big fan of your “music tech Cold War” analogy.-

It sounds like the most important think Warner is doing is pulling data accusation and analysis in house. Data is the raw material for the information revolution we are in. Google and Facebook are so strong because of the amount of data they control. With Warner pulling this in house, they are able to save money by not having to buy it from outside. Also, they will be able to find insights their competitors will not be able to get, thus giving them a huge competitive advantage.
