Wow Daniel – this is informative, amazing and slightly scary! My thought; this seems like a solid implantation to have safe, covid free events, I do see some holes in this plan that may cause disruption in user experience and pricing. In the article, people can attend events if they have a covid- negative test up to 72 hours prior to the event – meaning testing and getting results back in a timely fashion would have to approve (I know and seen people wait for up to two weeks for their Covid test). Also, I have seen lots of blogs where people expressed their thoughts on vaccines, and that they would not want to get it being that it would be a fairly new vaccine. I think this would create some chaos with ticket sales – and possibly attendance. I think a great way to combat this would be to offer discounted tickets to watch the concert virtually through a password protected portal. I think this is a great way to implement AI – to all get us back to some type of normalcy safety. I think if the holes are “ironed” out with some of the issues I see happening, I think other companies will adopt this merthod.

This is cool! I feel like Amber brought up some good points on the pressing issues that event promoters will need to iron out. I would love to see how this plays out. I feel like you’ve brought this up before about customer profiles and using them to promote events through Spotify when we started talking about Artificial Intellifence. I wonder where else they could apply these techniques to?
-
I really like your idea to use tech to limit scalping. Ticketmaster could incentivize people to utilize their system, and give up data, by offering pre-pre sales. People who have gone to shows of the band, or bands like them, would get access to tickets even before whole sellers see them. This ensures that true fans get the best access to seats. Combine this with a digital ticket and there is almost no way for reselling.
-
Interesting article thank you for sharing Daniel. I have to say as someone who loves attending live events, that has been the last thing on my mind even once restrictions loosen. I liked how you were able to point out the benefits and drawbacks to this method from multiple perspectives. With everything going digital, privacy of personal data always comes into play. Also test are not always accurate, so it will be interesting to see how ticketmaster and other live event retailers take that into account.
-
This was really interesting to me! I love going to live events, especially sporting events. My friends and I were even thinking about getting Giants season tickets but we were even hesitant on that because you really don’t know what the future holds these days. 2021 is so unknown right now.
As you’ve discussed, there are benefits and drawbacks to these online ticketing options. Scalpers will definitely have more issues getting tickets. Being able to make events a safer place will definitely be much easier and I think that is the most important part of it all. It only takes a few people at a sporting event to have the virus and spread it to many others. Keeping track of the data on all of the people coming into the stadium or concert venue will help limit the spread of the virus, but there privacy laws is always a concern as well.
It will be interesting to see how venues and ticket companies are going to handle these matters. Insurance and waivers are going to be part of it as well. I am sure we will have to sign off on documents stating that the venues aren’t responsible. There are a lot of factors to take in consideration when making sure a person is eligible to attend a live event.
-
thank you for sharing this information Daniel! I didn’t even know LiveNation was taking this approach for 2021 see as it will still be up to states to allow live events to happen again. I think it’s important that people do make sure they have tested negative for covid-19. As for the vaccine, I think a lot of places are going to make sure you have gotten it in order to continue with what you hope to do. However, we already have anti-maskers, who believe they’re taking away their rights, so I could only imagine peoples reactions to be told they can’t continue with doing such thing, like attend a concert or sports event without having the vaccine. I personally don’t trust other people, as seeing that photo, even though they are social distancing, no one is wearing masks. Covid-19 is an airborne disease that affects the lungs and peoples. breathing, It is going to be a while before things go back to “normal.”
-
Daniel, this is a great analysis and I think it is very interesting to see how we are utilizing technology to find solutions for issues that have risen due to Covid. I am personally looking forward to this as I would really like to go to a live event next year once I receive the vaccine. I miss being able to attend concerts and would be more than willing to use a mask while at events. As Maddie talked about, I understand where she is coming from as it is a controversial topic but I think that once the vaccine is available I would be willing to utilize technology, such as smart tickets, to attend events. I think at some point we will have to adjust and create a new “normal” but I think it is important to still be able to do activities to keep us motivated. There are countries such as Australia that due to their low case rate have gone back to normality and do not even require masks to be used so hopefully next year the US will be able to reach those expectations. Anyway, thanks for sharing this great analysis!

Oh man, there’s so much to unpack here! This product could do really well for small (100=capacity and below) spots that want to get local live music or pick up smaller touring acts. But once we get into larger rooms, there is an entire live music ecosystem here that’s pretty functional (at least pre-COVID).
As a former promoter for a bunch of…[Read more]

Great observation here — the music industry, particularly on the recorded side, is way to dependent on streaming services. For many artists, this is simply just not sustainable. I think shift the us way from such a high beef died is a great way to address many different issues. It would do wonders for the environment. It would also help the average American’s health. I grew up in the Midwest, we would have red meat at least 4 days a week, the other 3 was fast food or chicken. By diversifying our diet, we would be able to live healthier lives. These are the kinds of solutions that are needed for wicked problems. Ones that address other wicked problems so they can pool resources to achieving both goals.

You raise some incredibly important issues here; the environmental impacts of producing animal meat, the health impacts of eating meat, and the lack of access to healthy food for many people in this country. It will be interesting to see whether Beyond Meat will be able to make a difference in these areas; I’m certainly glad to see the work that they are doing to get their product to more people. Personally, I have only tried the product once, and though I (think I ) was open to it, I really did not like it. I’m hopeful that other similar products will enter the market, and that they truly help to reduce our consumption, I think it is vital to the health of the planet.

I agree 100% with you about this point, and will be looking into this book. I think big tech has gotten used to the statues que and is fighting to hold onto that. We have seen industries fight change before and they always lose. The smart company is the one looking at a smarter online consumer and more regulated market, and adjusting the company to match. If the big tech firms continue to dump millions of dollars to protect their position, they will only speed up their down fall. Traditional companies have been able to survive large changes in the market place by claiming to be too big to fail, GM and Ford each employ over 160,000 people, not to mention all the jobs that feed into their supply chain. Facebook employees 45,000, and provides virtually no logistical chain. This firms will be hard pressed to get public support for 50,000 jobs after they have spend the last two decades taking advantage of our data.

Definitely think that we could see situations in the future where DNA matching leads to some false convictions. Does that outweigh the benefits of sharing DNA benefits? That’s where there is a ton of room for debate.

Very helpful explaininer here! I’ve always wondered how much companies make off our data.
At $89 an email, I could totally see people selling their data off to buyers if they had the chance. Could we eventually see consumers gaining leverage by forming groups to sell their data together? Sounds like a Sci-Fi channel movie.
