Hi Samantha,
Interesting read! I’m not at all surprised as I have heard stories of other AI like motion-detecting sinks being unable to detect the hands of people of color. But this is incredibly dangerous. From my perspective, this is what happens when you don’t have diverse voices in the room, glaring issues are missed. It’s unfortunate but…[Read more]

Hi Brandyn,
I honestly do think the benefit IoT is worth the risk. It terms of farming, the stakes are so high. If crops aren’t produced so many people are effected, literally lives are at stake, Another idea for IoT in terms of farming could be a small- drone like product that emits a sound or scent that is unbearable to insects. It could…[Read more]

Hi Demi,
As an iPhone user, I am happy with this update and I appreciate Apple’s efforts to ensure my privacy. As a marketer, however, I’m obviously not so happy. I know how data is important to the customer experience and without it, it adds a barrier but I believe a good marketer can truly rise to the challenge. I like what you said about how…[Read more]

Ryan,
This is really a brilliant idea! I think it could be useful for many types of infrastructure. A small pedestrian bridge collapsed over a highway heading into the city near where I live collapsed a few months. I believe about 5 people were injured and without access to the other side, it left people living in low income communities who…[Read more]

Andrew,
I honestly found the concept of blockchain to be a but confusing, so thank you for offering another example here. Hi Ben, I think you raise a great point here. One of the reasons I actually shifted my career away from social media marketing and into email is because I could never really see the results of my labor. In nonprofit, well any business really, raising funds for our programs was most important. I didn’t see how spending an hour on a post for 40…[Read more]

Hi Benjamin,
Interesting post. I think this is a really good way to use digital innovation. It never occurred to me that housing is cheaper than paying for repeat ER visits, although I shouldn’t be surprised. I think what’s great about this innovation is that it can help fight homelessness of course. I would love to see a day where no one in…[Read more]

Hey Chelle! This is a super interesting topic and innovation, I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it until today. I’ll start by saying that as a woman of color, this sounds wonderful and I completely agree that diverse companies typically hold more talent. Generally, I think this would be a great technology for companies to integrate into their hiring process. However, would this only work when an applicant applies directly on a company website? If so, this could leave open a gap for hesitant hiring manager to focus on third-party websites (like Indeed, Linked-in, etc.) so they don’t have to use the technology. Unfortunately, I also feel like companies that would use this already have a focus on diversity. I would love to see this implemented, but I am worried that we’ll have to wait a while before it begins making a real impact. Thanks for posting about this!

Hey Chelle,
This is a very interesting AI solution because it wouldn’t take much to implement and would make the hiring process more than fair. I think you paint a great picture of how something as simple as a name can be used against you before you’ve even sat down for an interview. Your post reminds me of the show, The Voice, where the only focus is the talent. The application process for jobs should function the same. Great post!

Hi Chelle,
Great insight. It caught me thinking are we consuming too much technology and then using more technology to get out the overuse?: Your post is an example of how the good and bad of technology are inextricably mingled and overlapping. I perceive meditation as time away from everything worldly, so I can’t imagine being monitored while meditating as of now. However, considering how fast perceptions change, I wouldn’t be surprised if I use IoT devices to improve my meditation journey in the future. To add more, I find designing UX around human stats, as you mentioned in the post, complex yet intriguing. We don’t know yet, but it could be as successful as fitness wearables are. It could be the most exciting innovation for people who don’t mind using headbands or other devices while meditating.
I learned about innovative use of IoT through your post, which I hadn’t heard before. I am excited to see how customers will accept Muse headbands in the future. Thank you!

Hey Chelle!
Great post! I frequently feel like my technology robs me of my peace! I’m trying to walk away from my phone more often. I do love a good guided meditation though, so maybe I just need to embrace the way my technology can help me relax. I have heard great reviews of both Headspace and Calm! I will give them both a try and let you know.
I love the idea of a meditation headband! I feel like the physical weight on my head would help me engage more deeply. In terms of a data breach, I honestly don’t think I would care too much. I would be much more concerned about my credit card number or SSN being leaked! I don’t think my heart rate or breathing techniques would drastically differ from the next person.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Chelle,
I didn’t even consider the amount my smart technology has helped me find my peace. My Apple Watch is the first one to catch on when I’m stressed. It reminds me to “breathe”. Sometimes that one minute of breathing really makes a difference. I never did that before getting an Apple Watch and allowing IoT tech into my life.
I can appreciate the Muse 2 Meditation Headband company giving us control of our own data. It is very surprising if they aren’t using it in any capacity. I wonder where all of that unused data is going. In the event of a data breach, I believe the usefulness of this device would be worth having my data out there. As long as they don’t gain access to any banking or credit card information. I’m curious to see how they would deal with security issues, HIPAA, and how other companies will adopt this technology in the future.
Thanks for the post!

Hi Chelle,
Great post! I don’t really mediate but I would like to start. I’ve heard so many great things about Calm and Headspace. I decided to download Calm because I always see an ad about it. Going to try to explore this app as much as I can during my 7 day free trial. These apps and IOT technology for meditation can get pricy, but it’s worth it if it helps reduce stress.
I do like how the Muse Headband company respects our privacy but I wouldn’t be too worried if some data got out. If its just heart rate, brain activity, breathing technique then I would be fine with it. If it was credit card or social security number that’s a bit different.
Really enjoyed your post!

Hi Chelle,
Thank you for bringing this up! I always find myself stressed out from too much screen time…and then watch three hours of Netflix to “unwind” and spend even more time in front of a screen. I’ve tried meditation on and off, but haven’t been able to get into the habit of doing it regularly. It’s hard to resist the urge to constantly check my phone or think of the million things I have going on in a given day. The idea of a headband tracking things such as my heart rate and brain activity is intriguing to me, though, and might actually be an incentive to keep up the habit. I would be interested to see how these things change day over day, and am curious as to how much stress impacts these functions as well. Having a baseline to refer back to is a good way to stay motivated and track your progress, and a headband makes more sense than glancing down at a phone screen throughout a meditation session.

Hey Chelle,
Neat post! Thank you for bringing up the topic of mental health and mediation, especially as it relates to our industry!
I agree that IoT is the riskiest when it comes to health data and personal information, especially with the threat of privacy and security breaches.
It seems like Millennials and Gen Z tend to feel less concerned about these risks and find that the benefits, like convenience, connectivity, and tracking outweigh the risks. I supposed this is convenient as younger generations come of age, the technology will have more longevity.
