I have taken on more of a Project Manager role where I am now and have been keen on putting together journey maps for some of the more complex projects. I found some stakeholders enjoy seeing the breakdown than reading the same process in a word doc.

In my experience, Marketing and IT never got along because each side thought that they were the subject matter expert and didn’t want to consider the other side in the decision making process.
The lack of communication was a huge factor but it always seemed that we would hide things from each other until the last minute so that a project would…[Read more]

I totally agree with you on this Sara. Where is the line between guidance and interference. In my agency experience, I think it came down to more of a science of knowing how to compartmentalize the given areas needed to be worked on to allow for fluidity when needed.

Such a great example of effectively using the “5 Whys,” Braden. Thanks for sharing this story. I love that Toyota has done this. Such a great idea to donate efficiency measures. I’ve definitely had encounters with non-profits that have been so delayed, so inefficient, that I was very reluctant to donate to their cause. If their funds are not being used efficiently, why would you want to donate? The Kaizen methodology is a great line of thinking for all industries, and really essential for a company – like a non-profit – that must be cost-effective in every step of the process.

I would assume that the trend data isn’t a good indicator since it’s more of an information request from a potential voter than a poll asking who they are voting for.

It’s really kind of a bummer that this is just another link in the T&Cs. As we are all working in digital, I know that we all probably directly or indirectly benefit from the data our companies are able to collect. But I really wish is was more clear how our information is gathered and used. Is it being sold? Is my personal information out there for everyone to see? How can I possibly keep my credit card number safe when I’m now shopping online 75% of the time? It really is such a scary/exciting time to be in digital.

Totally agree with the sentiment of the main pull quote in your post as well as the cartoon: be the change you want to see in the world. This notion lends itself to an entire style of management that I tend to gravitate towards. As you work your way up the chain and have more people reporting to you (and more responsibility) there is a certain degree of delegation to be done. However, it’s always appreciated when the superior is willing to get his or her hands dirty and taking on some of the work. You can tell your subordinates, “Ah, you take care of all it” just like you can’t tell them “Ah, you figure it out” when it comes to changing a process or a system.
