Amy Lavin wrote a new post, Philly Soda Tax – Did it accomplish its goals?, on the site Business Intelligence MIS 5101 Spring 2019 2 years ago
Damarah and I had an interesting exchange outside of class last night around the Philly soda tax.
“Philadelphia’s soda tax, implemented in 2017, comes to 1.5 cents per ounce, equal to a hefty $1 tax on a t […]

“We find no significant reduction in calorie and sugar intake, conclude researchers Stephan Seiler from Stanford University, Anna Tuchman from Northwestern and Song Yao from the University of Minnesota, in a study published this week.”
“The tax does not lead to a shift in consumption towards healthier products, it affects low income households more severely, and it is limited in its ability to raise revenue,”
A study was done to see the effects this tax has had on sugar intake by Philadelphians. It shows that the tax did not do what it was intended to do and only led individuals to drive outside of the city to purchase soda, and for those who can’t afford to drive outside of the city they just conformed to paying more for soda. Although this has not worked and has been complained about by nearly everyone in the city, if the tax money gained from this is used correctly and benefits citizens it can have a silver lining. If not, it seems like it will be an all around failure.

Nice connection of data & the cloud, Matt! You ask some good questions. I think data will remain a core process for sure – and the cloud enables companies of any size to become users and storers of data – the scalability and security promises of the cloud make storing vast amounts of data much more attainable by organizations. I think you pose…[Read more]

I think what is also interesting with the rise of streaming data is that the ads can be so much better targeted to the viewer – maybe for a reduced cost even? I watched the game on cable at the party – were the ads the same when streamed? Were there ads?

I agree Evelyn! Last year, I was definitely focused on the game – this year, I was focused back on the snacks! Even the commercials – when I saw the Bud Light guys, I was like, meh – can they top Philly Philly? Doubtful – and then went back to get some more guac. Nice post!

Really insightful post with great tips! Data collection may become the easiest step in all of this – knowing what to do with it is where the magic happens, right? I have seen organizations make big decisions based on bad data – and then rather than dig into the data to see what the problem may have been, they blame the system or the data!
