Instagram updating it’s features is not a new concept. But it’s new feature update isn’t as positive as they banked on it being. The main feed is getting away from clear and easy buttons to videos with unfindable mute buttons and a volume control that will turn on sound from the slightest click. The iconic photo-sharing app is becoming more video-sharing with reels and videos embedded in the main feed. Two main questions the update poses are 1)why is it so hard to mute videos now? and 2) why is it no longer possible to rapidly and smoothly scroll through your feed?
The overall answer is because the photo-sharing giant wants to keep up with it’s newest rival, Tik Tok. TikTok is purely video, so Instagram is heading that way too. “We’ve been trying to make Instagram do better by video,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri is quoted saying in an article by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Instagram is pushing more videos because they claim it’s what the people, even if some of the people are saying no. I personally dislike having to open a video, and subsequently watch it, in order to mute it when I’m scrolling. I also dislike seeing more videos than photos. As a major consumer of social media, it seems weird to me that Instagram would not give users the choice to personalize their experience, be it less or more videos.
Wow! didn’t know that! thank for the head’s up.
