Interview Date: 10/18/2019
I had the privilege of interviewing Rob Ainbinder, CEO of Why People Click this past Friday. We had a lively conversation on his history and how and why he started his business. Rob started his career as a technical writer and expanded into web development and project management. Around 2005, he had an opportunity to move into internet marketing and over the last 14 years has honed his digital marketing expertise at many business in North Carolina and Texas.
Over the last 5 years Rob has built his business organically one client at a time and has created a successful digital marketing agency. I asked Rob how he was able to start his business after several years as a working professional and he stated that when he decided to begin his agency he started out by creating a smaller personally financial footprint and worked to become debt free. By having a smaller personal financial footprint, he was able to grow his business successfully during this time by focusing on local businesses in North Carolina. By owning his own business it also allowed him the flexibility to work as needed to help take of personal matters at home for a few years.
For the next chapter of his business he is focusing on expanding his client base as well as finding a repeatable sales process that works effectively for him. He is a one man shop after all, so when you wear all the hats you need a process you can repeat to grow the business. Now that Rob is past the launch cycle of his business he’s evaluating a specific niche market to focus on. He told me to be successful at this point in your business you need to begin to identify a market you can be passionate about and that closely aligns to your personal and professional goals. He kept the specific market under wraps! He stated he was working to be “everything to a few people” and that he felt that this was the best direction for his business.
Rob also has an expansive background outside of his agency; he is a blogger/influencer on Digital Dads and co-produces a Podcast focused on two dads and how to raise great kids. He has also published 2 books Mastering Google Keep and Pitmaster’s Log Book: Barbecue Notes and Perfected Recipes both available on Amazon.
It was a great honor for me to speak with Rob and I was grateful to listen to his story on how he has been successful at creating his own agency and learning a lot about him both personally and professionally. I look forward to seeing where his business takes him over the next 5 years.
