Elvita Quiñones is a higher education professional with experience in admissions, student services, research, academic advising, program coordination and adjunct teaching. Elvita has been with the Fox School of Business of Temple University since spring of 2007, first as an Academic Advisor and now Associate Director. Ms. Quiñones is also a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors (NACADA.)
The first in her family to attend college, Elvita graduated from West Chester University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Art in Political Science. In 2005, she obtained her Master of Science in Nonprofit Management with a focus in Higher Education Administration from Eastern University. A lifetime alumna, Ms. Quiñones became a sister of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. in the fall of 2000. Elvita is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Digital Innovation in Marketing at the Fox School of Business and anticipates graduating in December 2016.
Elvita has established and coordinated the Peer Advising Program and Virtual Advising Initiative for the Fox School of Business. Peer advisors are an essential part of the Fox School of Business’ Center of Undergraduate Advising. They provide the perspective of an upper-class student in the Fox School of Business. More importantly, peer advisors assist students’ transition into Temple University by sharing their strategies for academic success and knowledge of university resources. Our peer advisors are recruited from amongst the brightest in the Fox School of Business, trained by the Center for Undergraduate Advising and mentored by academic advisors.
The Virtual Advising initiative is the first of it’s kind. Elvita established the “on-line real-time academic advising” via WebEx, a web-based conferencing web-based software. Through virtual advising students are able to video conference with their academic advisor, share desktops to review documents together and record the session for later viewing. By incorporating virtual advising, the Fox School of Business supports Temple University’s sustainability mission by providing convenient, environmentally friendly, and time-saving student services. Elvita teaches and consults on virtual advising practices to various advising office at Temple University and NACADA members. She created the “Case for Virtual Advising” website for advisors to blog about virtual advising best practices.
In recognition of her work with virtual advising and use of social media in academic advising, in May 2012 Elvita won the Fox School of Business Blue Mouse Award Leader in Teaching for Innovation for excellence in use of technology. In May of 2013, in recognition of her work recruiting, advising and facilitating the establishment the new Online Bachelor Business Administration program, Ms. Quiñones won the Fox School of Business Administrative Diamond Award.
