Do you remember the days of the 8 inch floppy disk? I do. More recently we have used CDs or USB thumb drives to transfer around data from one computer to another. Thank goodness for cloud storage! We no longer have to tote around anything that will take up space or potentially break on us leaving us without our data. Cloud storage is where you store your data on an external host server instead of your computer, disk or USB drive. You save your data to “the cloud,” as it’s called. You choose which provider you want to save it to and upload/save your content to that server. I enjoy using cloud storage for as many as my devices as possible for several reasons. My favorite reason to use the cloud is to store my documents, photos and music somewhere outside of my devices to allow for cross-platform usage. I also appreciate that I am freeing up space on my devices by hosting my data on an external server which makes my devices faster and enable me to have a longer shelf-life to them. Just as important, if my device(s) break, I can easily access my data via the cloud storage provider. I don’t have to worry that I will lose my important family photos, school work or music. It’s all there on the cloud.
I use several cloud storage provides including DropBox, Box.com, Google Drive, OneDrive, Amazon, and iCloud. At this point, I would have to say that DropBox is my favorite cloud storage provider with Google Drive coming in at second. I love the ease of use that DropBox and GoogleDrive offer. They both allow me to collaborate easily with other. I find it easier to search from my data through DropBox. Google Drive allows you more free space compared to Dropbox. I am a PC Windows user primarily except for my iPhone. I like iCloud for my iPhone. I suspect if I was a Mac user, I would prefer iCloud to all other providers since it’s built to smoothly since with all things Apple. (Apple users, please feel free to comment.)
View a side by side comparison compiled by pcmag.com of 2015’s best cloud storage service. What do you think? What is your favorite cloud storage provider and why? Wow, when I look back to how far we have come with data storage in such a short period of time. Check out picture 2 on the left for a visual of data storage evolution. I am very excited to see what the future will hold.
