I have a number of different interests and hobbies, but most of them revolve around gaming.
Games that I play:
- Valorant
- Apex Legends
- League of Legends
- Overwatch
- Genshin Impact
- Osu!
- Stardew Valley
- etc.
I am pretty active online and Temple University’s Esports Club Discord, so if you’re interested in gaming with me you should join us! We’re always looking for new people to play with casually or to compete in collegiate tournaments.
As someone with a degree related to design, you can probably guess that I am a fan of the arts. I used to play the violin, piano, and sing in choir but quit in highschool. I still really enjoy dancing, but mostly for fun- and I really love Kpop music and watching anime! I could probably ramble on and on, so I’ll just end it with my favorite food- KBBQ.
It’s awesome that you’ve managed to take a personal interest and turn it into a great way to interact with other classmates through the Temple University Esports Club Discord. Have you ever thought of crossing over your love of gaming with the design degree? Or, is that something you’re planning to do with the new marketing skills you’ll be developing?
Most importantly, best KBBQ place in Philadelphia? I stumbled across Korean Grill House after not making it to a local H-Mart in time to do some shopping. Have you been?
I actually wanted to be a character designer for games back when I was in highschool- but my parents kind of pushed me to pick all the STEM-related classes for electives instead of any art classes so I kind of felt like it was a bit too late, plus later I learned how tough the game industry is on its artists and that I’d probably end up hating illustration if I pursued it as a career. My boyfriend’s working as a marketing intern for Nerd St Gamers, and they’re in charge of a lot of Esports events in the Philadelphia area so who knows- maybe one day I’ll work with him on something.
(My favorite KBBQ place is Kpot, there’s one in Oregon Ave. and it’s all you can eat. I haven’t went to Korean Grill House but I have been to H-Mart a bunch, it’s pretty cool.)
As someone who is also a lover of the arts, it’s exciting to me to connect with someone who also understands the direct connection between cultural experiences and marketing/design. As a dramatic writer in plays and screenplays, I visualize my contributions to aspects of marketing such as the creation of characters (or as they call them.. .personas) for UX design and in the understanding of narratives and how they can captivate an audience. It’s the same I think when using design concepts from an artistic lens to use in a marketing sphere. As someone who is more of a design n00b, it would be great to connect written content with superlative design.
And while I also used to sing in choirs in high school, now I just sing to my family or in my car most of the time… or the occasional karaoke.
P.S. I think the Temple Esports team might be interested in what our film folks and media arts folks are doing… there’s some exciting crossover there. I can’t say I’m a competitive gamer — but my six year old is a super smash brothers legend in our house.
In my undergrad we were taught that the best way to constantly be creative and make new concepts is to go outside and explore/experience new things. I really think that exploring different forms of art (and anything, really) pushes a person to have more of an open mind when it comes to “ideas”. Also fun fact, my favorite musicals are Heathers and Six.
I think the Temple Esports club is always interested in collaborating with clubs- and honestly there’s a million different things that can be done regardless of how different the club interests are so maybe they’ll hit each other up sometime!
