Can Cities Out Smart Us?

Develop a post on your take on it … You could argue for/against IoT as a disruptive technology.  You could find an industry & explain why you believe IoT will disrupt it. Be sure to discuss implications for marketing strategy professionals, and how they should adapt to the disruption that you write about. (A quick google news search for “IoT disruption” will yield some interesting results

IoT is slowly drifting into every aspect of your lives, from transportation, to wardrobe to entertainment. Wether you like it or not, the internet is taking over our lives. But lets see how far it can go when it begins infiltrating your most personal space, your city.

Smart cities are the newest innovation around Iot, with plans to use electronic outlets and sensors to manage services more efficiently (and of course collect data in the process). Smart city Iot initiatives include powerful free wifi towers, self driving public transportation, natural disaster sensors and more.

With many cities increasing spending on initiatives, with global spending to reach 327 billion by 2025, there are still a long ways to go. Places that have already implemented initiatives are not seeing desired results, with three major issues being reliability, response time and security. As with all technology, there are going to be bugs and times needed offline to update and fix the bugs. But if a whole city is relying on the technology, its needs to be at the to of its game 24/7. The second issue comes with response time, if we are using initiatives to predict and investigate natural disasters, we need the system to be able to offer information in real time. And lastly as with anything related to technology, cyber thieves are always looking for a way to hack the system and steal informations.

Despite all everything needed to improve before we are able to actually be “smart” cities, I believe that marketing this disruptive technology (especially is areas far behind standard technology) to big tech companies can change lives. Having medical operations, transportation and more be able to serve us in real time is hopefully in the near future.
