A recent partnership between Meredith Corporation and the retail company Clerk is finding a solution to Meredith’s sales processes, as well as their customer experience. The partnership’s mission is to optimize store performance for Meredith’s newsstand sales. Meredith Corporation is a worldwide leading media company that produces journalism content across digital, video, magazine, and broadcast television. Their initial business model was all print media, but like all publication companies, they have innovated and adapted into the digital realm throughout the years. Clerk is a technology company that focuses on building a better retail experience, by improving marketing and merchandising performance at checkout. Clerk’s business model has system process and user experience highlighted across the board.
Magazines and the publication industry, in general, have had to adapt in order to stay afloat in our increasingly digital society. This has been a huge challenge for Meredith over the past few years, yet they have done a remarkable job at focusing on innovation in their industry. I had not heard of Clerk prior to this partnership and although their basic business model focuses on ‘simplifying merchandising and marketing in stores’ I believe at the core of their technology is process improvement. Clerk collects data across the customer journey of their client’s stores (or in Meredith’s case, the stores where their product is being sold). Creating a transparent understanding of their products, measuring customer engagement, and at the end of the day analyzing product performance.
I believe Clerk is a process improvement technology as it creates a waterfall picture of the customer journey process, identifying pain points and determining where their clients can improve the process in order to boost sales.
In addition to the process aspect of Clerk’s mission, at the core is user experience. Clerk is harvesting user experience data, analyzing it, and making decisions on how their experience can be improved to not only benefit the consumer but also the provider.
Clerk provides high-level value to a variety of industries, as process improvement is necessary in all aspects of business and beyond. I find this partnership between a mass media corporation and Clerk exciting as I think it will be a huge leap forward for future innovations within Meredith and across the industry.
