Welcome to the world of Longwood Gardens, where garden design, horticulture, education, and the arts interplay to inspire and enlighten our guests.1
An American botanical garden located in Kennett Square, PA, Longwood Gardens encompasses more than 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows. Open year-round, visitors can enjoy both outdoor and indoor displays of native and exotic plants and horticulture, events and performances, seasonal and themed attractions, as well as educational lectures, courses and workshops.2 In addition to the more than 20 outdoor gardens and 20 indoor gardens, seasonal displays are carried out annually across ‘five’ seasons: Orchid Extravaganza, Spring Blooms, Festival of Fountains, Autumn’s Colors, and A Longwood Christmas. Longwood Gardens.
The gardens are run by Longwood Gardens Inc., a not-for-profit organization which receives no government funding. The primary funding for the upkeep of the Gardens still comes from Pierre du Pont’s endowment as well as from admission income and sale of merchandise.3
Longwood Gardens is the living legacy of Pierre S. Du Pont, inspiring people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education, and the arts.
The Gardens mission extends beyond the beautiful gardens and horticultural displays enjoyed by more than 1.5 million visitors each year. Horticultural endeavors include thriving research and crop production programs that serve to further their reputation as a pioneer among public gardens and has led to the formation of research partnerships with likeminded institutions and organizations globally.4
Educational programs cover a wide selection of world-class learning opportunities for both children and adults. In keeping with du Pont’s desire to establish a school where students and others may receive instruction in the arts of horticulture and floriculture, education is integral to the Garden’s mission.5 The programs cover all age groups from K-8 to High School and College & University, as well as International and Continuing Education for adults.
Performance Arts are also very important, and Longwood Gardens is one of the premier performance venues in the Philadelphia region. Over the years the performance lineup has expanded from a handful of events in the summer, to a year- round schedule that includes local artists, Grammy-award winning musicians, world-renowned dance ensembles, and a host of interpretive exhibitions and displays.
Longwood Gardens is also committed to the preservation and Improvement of the earth’s natural resources and have developed several sustainability programs including land stewardship and management, recycling and composting, pest management, water conservation, and alternative energy resources. 7
