According to the Administration on Aging, there are currently 46.2 million people 65 or older living in America. By 2040 that demographic will account for 21.7 percent of the country’s total population and by 2060 its projected that there will be 98 million people 65 or older in the general population.
Americans are also living longer. According to the CDC, Americans are living 78.8 years (81.2 years for women; 76.4 years for men). There are some conflicting reports projecting life expectancy going forward but they all agree on one thing: people will be living longer.
By 2050, the MacArthur Research Network on an Aging Society believes that women will live 89 to 94 on average while men will live 83 to 86 years. The Social Security Administration projects that women will live 83 to 85 years while men will live an average of 80 years.
As more and more seniors plan to “age in place,” they will need their transportation taken care of. This is where the automated vehicle comes into play.
