Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs (MCCPDC) has taken the pharmaceutical world by storm. It was introduced to the world at the beginning of the summer and has very much changed how we look at pharmacies. MCCPDC has been all over social media, it is being talked about on TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook (and I am sure even more social media outlets, but these are just the ones I have seen). What Cuban has created is really something special, the MCCPDC website says “No middlemen. No price games. Huge drug savings.” and the process is pretty much straight forward from there. The website shows a lot of different popular drugs and then compares their retail price is versus Mark’s price, and the difference is ridiculous. As an example, the drug Imatinib is sold at a retail value of $9,657 and Cuban is selling it for $47 (Forbes).
The website was designed in a very straight forward, simple way. It is extremely user friendly and super easy to navigate. The exact steps are laid out for the user to follow and the entire process is explained in extreme detail, which ultimately leaves little room for errors. There are over 100 generic drugs offered on the website, and all are reasonably priced. MCCPDC purchases the drugs directly from the manufacture and skips the middleman (which allows for the price to remain as low as it does). Another reason they are able to keep the prices so low is because they do not accept insurance (when buying drugs/medicine a lot of insurance companies require drugs to be listed at a certain price).
I believe that Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs is a great definition of “process improvement and innovation”. I mean, Mark Cuban looked at the prices of drugs, and saw how so many people were unable to afford certain medicines that could help save their lives, and changed the pharmaceuticals game. I really think this is a big step in the right direction and hope this will help make more drugs and medication more affordable in the future. What Mark Cuban is doing here is a big step in the right direction, and I cannot wait to see where he takes his company and how many lives he ends up changing.
