So, you’re interested in my interests? Interesting.
I’ve been working in broadcast media my entire professional career. While I’ve become a well-rounded marketer and promoter, I’m a promo guy by trade. That basically means I make commercials (though we don’t call them “commercials” in public media).
Having worked in and around newsrooms since my college days, I have a background in journalism as well. So, I’m interested in “talking shop” with fellow media makers or anyone who’d like to know more about what I do.
I grew up with a tape recorder and video camera in my hand. Sketch comedy was a hobby in high school and college, and that work (along with my dabbling in animation) helped me get my first job in the field.
Since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by television and radio. I love the history, the process, the intrigue, the magic of entertainment. I gravitated toward “adult” fare like late night talk shows and Saturday Night Live early on, sensing an energy and excitement there that was thrilling. I love cartoons and comedy films.
I’m a dad. I’m a secretary on the Home & School Association board and assistant coach of my son’s soccer team. So much of my life is spent feeding, entertaining and transporting them – and I love every single moment.
I draw. I’ve always been a chronic doodler. I used to write and illustrate comic strips and longer graphic novel-style stories, but my most recent extended project was a webcomic focused on the Occupy movement years ago – so it’s been a while since I’ve done anything but the odd o
e-off. I illustrate our family Christmas card every year.
I love Twitter. I used to be a blogger – a chronic over-sharer – and Twitter scratches my itch to let people in on my inner monologue while limiting me to 140-character bursts. The forced self-editing and careful word economy dance make it a fun hobby – and I’ve actually met some wonderful people behind all the witty posts. I don’t always use it professionally; in fact, I use it rather unprofessionally. But it’s a fun, cathartic outlet.
Coffee’s an interest of mine. I love a good cup of coffee. Have you ever been to Ray’s Café in Philadelphia? Highly recommended. Tell Grace I said hello – she’s warm, wonderful, and does not disappoint. And check out Whiff Roasters in Lititz, PA. Amazing blends. Liking coffee isn’t special, sure – but I find that an appreciation for good coffee is surprisingly rare. Will I drink a cup of Dunkin’ if that’s what’s there? Sure. But I do so knowing that there’s a much better cup out there, calling my name.
There’s certainly more, but I’ve gone on long enough. If you want to know more about me, say hello!
