Designing a website is a complex task regardless of purpose of the website. Sometimes it can be useful to have a team of designers working together to design a website so that they help lighten the individual workload. Sometimes multiple designs can also be an extreme detriment to the user experience design process.
Designing corporate level websites is no easy feat, however this isn’t always due to the scale of the site itself. Often times the input from multiple different stakeholders is what makes the design so complex. At a high level, a website is supposed to promote a company’s brand, and sell its product or service. Seems simple right? Unfortunately this is not always the case, especially at enterprise level organizations.
Multiple different stakeholders with multiple different goals all want their specific criteria incorporated into the website design. Therefore, websites are often a compromise as the design caters to a little piece of what each stakeholder wanted. These designs address multiple different stakeholder needs, but rarely deliver the results needed from any of them.
This is because the human brain can only visually process so much at once, and website designs are confined to these perceptual limitations. Unfortunately that is human nature and can’t be changed. On the other hand, narrowing website goals and limited scope creep can be managed. What does that all mean?
Keep it simple. User experience designers often try to keep website designs as simple as possible. This makes it easy for site visitors to navigate and use the site, and often provides the greatest returns. In order to keep the website design simple, the goals need to be simple. Again, this is difficult at the enterprise level, but organizations should settle on 1-3 of their most important goals for a single website. Anything more than this and the site visitors will be subject to sensory overload.
Limiting a site’s design to 1-3 main goals will prevent scope creep, as it will illuminate other stakeholders from stretching goals past what is feasible within the project. This is where the designers professional expertise can come into play, as they creative unique designs that can address these few goals efficiently.
